the company I work for is wanting to start hauling our own products and I need to figure out our operating costs per mile.I was thinking about $3.00 a mile. I reccomended a used truck about 50 to 75k. But I dont know what plates, ifta, prepass, insurance would cost. Also what items are required from the feds for regulations. It would be a "not for hire" as we will only haul our finished product. Any help is greatly appreciated. I will be the company driver but I only have 3 monthes experiance driving. Thanks again for your help.
my company is wanting to have their own trucks, what is a good operting cost figure?

You might look into leasing with Ryder or Penske . They handle all the paperwork for IFTA ,etc . They keep the trucks well maintained an you get a replacement if the truck breaks down and goes in the shop .
-
would they only be day cabs? or are they new trucks? I need to figure out a cost per mile and would it be cost efective lease or purchase used?
-
rick also this would be otr mostly with a military contract for our vehicles that we manufacture we would be going from base to base

I worked for Eastern Seaboard Packaging in Orlando . They leased 3 single axle day cabs , a single axle sleeper and a straight truck . They got a couple of good deals leasing used trucks that had been turned in after a`2 year lease . One was a 600 hp Freightliner day cab single axle Michelin had leased just to test tires on their track . It had the best interior I ever saw in a truck . That was from Interstate National Lease .

rick I would like to have a sleeper because i will be taking a trailer with either our vehicles or a training trailer to train troops on repairing our vehicles in the field. could be in North Carolina 1 week and in Texas the next week.

That's where leasing pays off . You'll have reliable service facilities all over the country . When you own the truck and break down on the road you'll need a lot of cash and risk being ripped off.
goldwing daddy Thanks this. -
But how do used truck leases work? is it an open end lease? and/or can you walk away? dont want to be tied to a lease you cant get out of if trucks is constantly a problem, if it was a purchase you can just trade in to get out that truck.
