@BIGZILLA . Congrats on the Pete. I've had a 69 & 72 & they are classy trucks. Just something to think about before you get too deep in the restoration. If this were my truck & not knowing its history I would do the following. Get a clean drain pan, large but shallow (4") and a 3/4" pipe plug. Pull the drain plug out of the back rear end with a 1/2" breaker bar, it should have a magnetic plug. Let a pint or so of oil drop into the pan & reinsert the spare plug. Note whatever metal or powder is on the plug & document your findings & clean the pan.. Then clean off the plug & use it in the front rearend & repeat this process to the aux. trans & then to the main trans documenting everything you find. You should end up with a spare magnetic plug to put back into the back rearend. Fine powder is normal on these plugs, chunks will indicate other issues but a good gear man can usually tell you if it will be a problem or not. Finally, I would remove the oil filter from the engine, & cut it open & look for any metal. The cartridge types are easy, but if it has been converted to a spin-on type its a little harder to cut the thing open. These simple inspections can tell you the condition of the main componets in just a couple hours with no more than the expense of a new oil filter. And when you are done, go back thru & check the oil levels on the rears & transmissions, there is an inspection plug on the side of them about the middle. ( you could actually use one of the inspection plugs for your spare drain plug) Good luck.

The 74 KW I drove had no front brakes either.
Yes they are Grandfathered in, except some states if you are pulling permitted weight lds. Ma. comes to mind. Says that on permit rules all trks. must have operating front brakes.
I had wheel lights on the 74.. So I had to make sure the inner side of the Alum. rims were polished up also

 

Try those collectors insurance places, assuming your not purring it to work...

 

Try Gulfway Insurers in FL...727-863-5451. They insure my 79 4070B. Hagerty used to insure my B75 but I don't think they insure antique trucks anymore. Might want to look into joining ATHS also. Cool truck. Glad to hear you won't be butchering it.
