Thanks for the good information. I have been away from OTR for quite a long time working locally for the local road district. I have been giving some thought to getting back out there. I have maintained my CDL all this time after grandfathering in 1991. I am at a place where I might want to buy a truck but first I need to go put in some time learning these new ways you guys have now. When I drove OTR it was between 1981 and 1989. I drove under HOS rules put into place in 1962. Back then it was all about 8 and 10, 60 for 7 , 70 for 8.... Sounds complicated? No, we could basically run forever with a wavy line that just went in 5 hour increments. Supposed to have 15 hour maximum days on duty or driving, only 10 for driving, 5 for being on duty, or 15 to be on duty all day doing what I don't know. It turned a 24 hour day into an 18 hour day. The clock stopped every time the line went into one of the top two lines. So you could get up at 6am spend 15 mins doing PTI then drive 5 hours. Then you would have lunch for a couple hours, maybe three.. Then you would go drive for another 5 hours and stop and get 5 hours of shuteye and then get up and 15 for PTI and drive another 5.... You see what I did there? 5+5 driving =10 but 5+3 sleeping and eating equals 8 and 8 buys another 10.... So it was pretty easy to drive a lot and not hang around anywhere long enough to get bored. Besides that if you were me, and about 10,000 other guys everyday was your first day out there! We kept all the hours we needed in the sidebox at .99 a book. Wasn't very safe I guess looking in hindsight but it was easy. You drove the way you wanted, only for some the way they wanted was to hang around the truck stop until they were out of actual time to make a delivery and then try to drive straight through as fast as they could... That was a reality too. In those 8 years of driving I think I was asked for my logbook twice and I had been warned that an inspection was waiting on me both timesEven when you got pulled over for speeding the cop usually treated you the same as they treat 4 wheelers, just sign here and follow me into town to pay your fine... Nothing about a log book, maybe a question about how long you had been driving. I am sure there are guys on here that remember these things. I got pulled over by a Ohio cop one time after getting caught by the airplane going more than 55.. So I am in his car, he writes me a speeding ticket and says you have to pay the fine before I can let you leave.. So I'm thinking about having to call the boss and get a comcheck when he whips out one of those credit card machines.. One of the old imprinter kind... Whips it out from under the seat and asks if I have a Mastercard or Visa.... I ain't kidding. So I am going to learn the new ways if I can, finish getting all the endorsements at my road districts expense and then I will look for the right situation to go out there and update my experience and see if this idea is for me before I go to the bank and buy my retirement vehicle
