I am a silver spoon when it comes to trucking. I grew up in it. My Dad and his brother were partners since the 60's. I was always either in the shop or with one of em unless school was in my way. They leased to Burns Cattle which advertised 48 hr service any where in the lower 48. After deregulation they got there own authority. I bought my truck on my own but I had all the good advice I needed a call away. Or they bought tires they didn't need to give me there old ones. Don't get me wrong I don't do it cause they did, I do it cause it's what I want to do. Its an addiction to chicken lights and chrome, a big bore CAT roarin thru the night on another late night flight

An old man told me about 30 years ago when I was young and trying to choose my path, that America's most beautiful women especially sought out truckers to keep them sexually satisfied, and the job would eventually make me wealthy and care-free and I'd see all of the best America had to offer.
He's gone now but I wish I'd have thought to ask him how long I need to stay with it for the sacrifices and hard work to pay off like he said it would.Last edited: Apr 17, 2016

I didn't start yet but the reason why i am getting into trucking is the freedom of the bs at regular jobs. No boss standing over your shoulder all day. Also i can save more driving OTR not needing to pay rent for an apartment. Quicker i can save for a piece of land and build a small house on. If i did that at a regular job it would take me years and years to save. I'm 38 i want my own property around 40 not 60 lol

Truck drivers pay less in taxes thanks to per diem.
Then think you don't need a car or house. That's big money saving right there if you wanna live that way.
I'm thinking of selling my house and I'm OTR.

I grew up in the truck with my dad. I think he started taking me with him when I was 2 or 3. I also skipped a lot of school days just to go overnight with him! It was the coolest thing ever, in my eyes. I was always out with him cranking up the landing gear, hooking up the air lines, opening trailer doors, putting fuel in the truck, checking the fluids and lug nuts, etc. The older I got, the more I fell in love with the job. He started hauling equipment when I got around 8 years old and he would always let me steer the truck on his lap in and out of the woods. At 9 years old, he let me take the reigns and drive the truck out of the woods one day. It was that very moment that I knew this was my calling. All of my free time was spent either riding with him, or sitting at home telling all my friends how much I loved being in the truck. So you could easily say that trucking was my life. I got my CDL at 18 and my first trucking job at 20. I would've went to work at 18, but I went to college to get a back up plan in case trucking falls through on me. But now I am in the industry and out of school and I can say that I love it more than anything. Just like I did when I was a kid!
BigSky, Slowpoke KW, Lepton1 and 3 others Thank this.
