To find a good truck stop, you have to go to ALOT of bad truck stops, only then will you know what a good truck stop is.

    Roll on Grasshopper.

You're a captive audience that's why. Plus you're being charged for the "convenience of not having to get off the beaten path.

That being said, Ohio trumps all with the free showers at their service plazas.

Do like most new guys and stop in the fuel lane at all of them. You will then find a few to mark as being good and all will be well.

Im always scanning the frontage type roads,in areas I travel often.
    If I notice,trucks parked next to a restaurant,for example,takes only a few clicks,to save the location,in my gps.
When I need parking, scroll through my favorites, and start hunting.
You can still find some smaller mom and pop truck stops..if you look.

It's going to be trial and error, bradking. Like rabbiporkchop said, taste is a personal thing. I'd just like to make a comment, if you plan to eat all your meals in truck stop restaurants, you can plan on health problems. Not the healthiest places to eat. A lot of drivers get a refrigerator and carry meals with them, healthier than truck stops for sure. Others carry cooking equipment, microwave, slow cooker, electric skillet, the RV industry has a lot of options for us. I don't really like truck stops, especially the mega chains. I get a nice fuel discount from the company I lease to, so I fuel and run most of the time. Mom and Pop truck stops can be fun, but mostly you're just going to have to figure this one out for yourself.

Last thing. As a new OTR driver, you're not starting at top pay (unless you're really fortunate) so your income won't be spectacular yet. Eating meals purchased at truck stops will take time out of your 14hr clock, drain your pocket, pack on useless pounds, and generally cause issues. Think about it.

Awhile back, I was at a Pilot in Victorville, Ca. About 2AM, I am awakened to a firm rapping at my passenger door. "You want some company"?, was repeated several times.

A mild irritation on my part was quickly followed by an urgent need from below the belt. "Why not"?, I replied and then I made the move to accommodate my newfound friend.

Imagine my surprise when I noticed, upon entry, a rotund, ageing, bearded fellow wearing ketchup and mustard stained pajamas and smelled like a dumpster behind a Chinese Buffet restaurant.
And the only introduction that he gave me was, "Hey! I need the extra money... I drive for Swift"!

    I should have known....
