New to this one. Been hauling gas for a while but switched to another company hauling asphalt oil. My company just bought a brand new truck and semi trailer (I've always been a truck and trailer driver). My boss coupled the units and set the fifth wheel where he thinks it should be... I don't doubt him he's got 45 years experience! He advised me to check obviously. 12,500 front axle and 34k drives and trailer. I may or may not have to slide the fifth wheel to make it legal- I've never done this. I am also going to have to see and experiment to find 80k when I load. Any tips here?

Don't get any on you..... 300 degrees F hurts bad !
Where you load will have scales and you can fine tune things there....
Most trailers have seals... A rod with washers on it. 3-4 spread out on the rod. Load to them , start low and get closer to 80k. After a couple of loads you'll have it figured out.
The good shippers load on a scale , no guess work neededLast edited: May 12, 2016

Seals?
-
A rod mounted near the lip of the dome cover. Hanging down towards the bottom of the trailer a foot or so... It would have 2-4 large washers type things mounted on it....
You use those as a visual loading level for the weight you want .
Say a 7000 gal trailer might have 3 seals 7000- at the top , 6500 gal middle and 6000 gal bottom.
You can use the trailer cal chart and set the seals as needed. But once you load on them it's a messy job....Last edited: May 12, 2016

Oh gotchaaaaaa. Yea I am going to climb up and Pop the dome tomorrow. I'm not sure if it has a float system in place like your saying. It's brand new so I figure it would. The other guys have old trailers and they use a bent coat hanger as a loafing reference. Any advice on sliding the fifth wheel to make axle weights?
-
Well, sliding the fifth wheel to make weight. First you have too know if your over on an axle group. Second, is it a smooth bore can? If so, the weight will evenly distribute throughout the trailer and you will need a scale weight with axle group readings. Third, get a loaded weight with axle group readings.

It has baffles. I'll estimate the load and get it to 80k then see where I'm at. I've just never had to slide the fifth wheel before. The trailer axles are fixed.

9000 gal tank ..... Almost 34 tons of asphalt on.
Turning and burning...unloader Thanks this. -
Whoa! What state are you in? I can do 12500 on the front. I believe close to 27 tons payload.

I'm guessing 25ish is about the best you can do......
Unless you have a featherweight unit ...
P.S. The fifth wheel will slide easier when your mt..... If there's no scales houses on your run do the load and make adjustments before you reload...
