"Seeking to deflect growing criticism, the Department of Transportation made two surprise statements late yesterday, announcing modifications to its plan allowing 100 Mexican trucking companies to run their long-haul rigs throughout the U.S. Responding to trucking industry criticism that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, was not merely conducting a test but implementing a permanent program without public comment, the FMCSA for the first time posted to the Federal Register a proposed set of "demonstration project" rules.
Also amid criticism Mexico had not opened up its own road to U.S. trucks, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters announced in a DOT statement issued late yesterday that U.S. trucks will be allowed to operate in Mexico at the start of the demonstration project.
As WND previously reported, when the Mexican truck pilot project initially was introduced by Peters Feb. 23, the test was entirely one-way. Mexican trucks from 100 Mexican trucking companies were to be given free access to the U.S., but at that time, Mexico had not agreed to open up to U.S. trucks. (...)

(...)As part of the program, U.S. inspectors will conduct in-person safety audits to ensure participating Mexican companies comply with U.S. safety regulations. The Department also will require all Mexican truck drivers to hold a valid commercial drivers license, comply with U.S. medical requirements, comply with all U.S. hours-of-service rules and be able to understand questions and directions in English. Mexican truck companies that are allowed to participate must have insurance with a U.S.-licensed firm and meet all U.S. safety standards, including drug and alcohol testing. Companies that meet these stringent standards will be allowed to make international pick up and deliveries only.(...)-From link above

No American in his right mind would want to drive a truck into Mexico.. with the way the crime is down there your life would be in jeopardy the entire time.. It simple as paying off a few cops and your a dead man...
thats not a fair trade for letting them into America..CANGST and dammyankee Thank this. -
I agree. I say let Mary Peters and her cronies drive a big truck in mexico a few times.
dammyankee Thanks this. -
I can't even see the price of the loads going into Mexico being able to compete with what our loads pay here. This is just BS that the DOT is handing out, so that they can take some of the heat off them selfs after being ripped the other day.
The DOT is in big trouble over this program, and is being scrutinized heavily by congress. They allowed a company that had way to many violations on trucks to run in this country, and didn't pull their authority. The company voluntarily withdrew from the program.
Watch your news, there's more to come. And I think that heads will roll at the DOT, for the whole mess.
dammyankee and highirish Thank this. -
There is a reason that the US government wants to open the boarder to Mexican truckers.
It's because they want to keep us US truckers in check when they raise the #### out of diesel fuel.
If they raise the diesel fuel they know we will raise our rates and they don't want that.
letting the Mexicans over will keep us in check because if we raise our price for freight, the Mexican trucker will take that load from us for much cheaper.mannmk7 Thanks this. -
Not to nitpick, but the government doesn't set fuel prices.Working Class Patriot Thanks this.
-
Correct, but they seen this coming. They figure if you let the Mexican trucker in that the US trucker can't raise there rate because the Mexican will pull the rug from right under his feet and take the load for cheaper.
If freight cost were to sky rocket the country would come to a halt. -
What will stop the Mexican trucks from running will be the CARB like regs that will eventually become nationally enforced. Mexican trucks do not even come close to the regs now. The reason why they're not shut down now in CA is that CARB does not have enough enforcement...yet. CARB has already hit L.A. Harbor, and the Teamsters too (per Lockridge's report on Tues. That's the Teamsters ploy to rid O/O's from running the harbor. Only company rigs will be able to run and they just happen to be signatory with the union. Maybe latana or some other union hand can explain this one).

You couldn't pay me enough to go near the boarder let alone into the country.. I highly doublt that after a few yrs of making sure Mexican driver meet dot regs that it will slack off and they will be up to their old routine again.. Heck the ones who drive for our co and o/o work 18 to 20 hrs as it is unchecked..
