Have you ever used a beam antenna on a base station?

Only for radio reception. Never for transmission.

It's kind of cool how it works when you rotate it isn't it?

YES. I am actually using my grand parents old TV antenna setup. Just allows me to tune in a FM/AM station that i wanna listen to. Due to Iheart radio i use the Antenna less and less

Wouldn't you like to experience that phenomena in a tractor-trailer as you're driving down the interstate?

Yes. But a rotating beam on a tractor seems like alot of work. Gotta keep my direction and their 20 in my my mind constantly. I am happy getting max In front/ behind signals for now. I loose some side to side but dont really care

It's not really working the way you think it's working

When I was running my Volvo 770 with coat phased antennas outside both fairings on the rear of the truck it was like sitting in a beam. Wherever I pointed my truck I could easily talk 60 miles ahead of me and 60 miles behind me no problem.
You will never experienced performance like that out of any tractor trailer unless it is a Volvo 770 or a 780 or in 880 configured exactly the way I had mine configured. About the only way to get that type of distance out of another vehicle would be to put it in a car with an antenna right in the middle of the roof but it would be Omni directional.

If I was sitting in a parking lot if I was sitting in a parking lot talking to someone and they were hitting me really good from a long distance away if I rotated the truck 90 degrees they would disappear out of my receiver
