They're pads. Good ones are still kinda pricey. Harbor Freight are not what a good mover would use but probably would be fine for what you guys are talking about. When I was in the packaging business I had a customer who ordered 36" X 5 X 5" angle tri wall boards to add strength to the top of his pallets of small boxes.

I used a lot of carpet scraps when I ran out of Olander's yard (the CRST Malone agent in Sioux Falls). Ran a lot of Daktronics loads out of there, and you had to be creative in reinforcing some of the crates their products were shipped in, which were often flimsy as hell.
