Hey Kroozn... Was there not enough practice and repetition @ orientation/load securement? I've watched alot of video, but I am pretty much new to flatbed as well.

Coils are not hard, just be smart about securement, use enough chains or straps and one extra, because my family may be in vehicle beside or behind you.

It was fast paced for my week because it was a 4 day week cause of memorial day.
He went over it. Showed us how to do it then said show me you xan do it and gave us all ones to do until we all did each securement. And we got a securement book.
Tarping is basically something that takes getting use to.
Aluminum coils I had were three skidded eye to the sky coils tgat required straps. For that being my first load it was an adventure.
Going in morning to pick up more aluminum coils to swing by my house sunday and deliver monday.playamwj12 and #KeepPounding! Thank this. -
You must have gotten a muscle shoals load. I did that once and decided it wasn't worth the hassle with the line haul being as low as it was.
The crash course you get in orientation is enough to get you going, but make sure to take lots of pis of each type of securement so you have a reference when you get out on your own. The book you'll get is very hand for the first few weeks till you find your rhythm. And there'll be other drivers at your customers that are more than willing to help you if you're have difficulty dont be afraid to ask.TruckerNerd, Kroozn20, playamwj12 and 2 others Thank this. -
You can definitely make money hauling coils. Ive made a friend whos only been here about six weeks, new to flatbed, lives in the Midwest and is moving steel everyday mostly coils and taking $1300 or more home on Friday. That's good out the gate.
My comment about coils was specifically toward aluminum coils. The rate tends to be about $1.55-1.60 a mile to the truck or less... So if my operating expenses are $1.06 a mile .55 cents profit per mile isn't enough to make me want to move them. Dealing with all the rules, fall protection crap isnt worth it to me.
As far as training goes for coils. Make sure before you leave and get out of orientation you kniw how to use the chains and binders. Nothing will slow you down more than having to back out binders because too much slack was in the chain before binding it down, have everything where you know you can find it. Inspect the link's in your chain and cotter pin before use, keep yiue binders extended and lubed. Be prepared before you get to tge mill.
Flatbed is frustratingly rewarding the first few weeks. Its dirty, often requires more than one shower a day, you go through a lot of clothes and you can get hurt making short cuts, or kill someone else.
The beginning is the worst here, your first few days on your own you will question whether flatbed is for you or not, and trying to run a business at the same time. Please don't hesitate to contact me for help.#KeepPounding!, TruckerNerd, 88 Alpha and 2 others Thank this. -
Yep muscle shoals. Crap paying load not worth it. I made the mistake and took the first load outta there......stupid me.
Definitely am sore from tarping and securing. I use to think i was in good shape. My legs are killing me lol.
All good though. Growing pains.
Only reason I took my next load home is to get through the house to move furniture because my brother bought me and my wife a king size bed frame. She's pregnant with our first child.
I'm not letting her lift anything.#KeepPounding!, TruckerNerd, 88 Alpha and 2 others Thank this. -

Or is that about what to expect being completely new to the flatbed side of things? I was looking to exceed the numbers of my past.
playamwj12 Thanks this. -
Im not sure what youve did before... In a normal month i take between $8000+
#KeepPounding! Thanks this. -
There is a learning curve to everything . Don't expect to make as much as play does, he works very hard at it and you have to get to know agents, and try to figure out a triangle to run and you should do okay. If you want to make decent money you Can't bé home every weekend.
#KeepPounding! Thanks this.
