Hi, just got my class A and have an interview with giant eagle/seaway/talon logistics in bedford heights near cleveland. They are a teamsters local 507. If i were to work at this union job and decide to go somewhere else, would non union companies hire me? Ive heard stories about non union companies turning down people when they find out they worked for a union job previously. Is this generally true?

Im with dave on this, why not give it a shot, if its not to bad you could hang out long enough to make good money on a easy bid route. Just set aside your own money for retirement. Dont count on union pensions. Even if they get bailed out.... they still dont have our interests in mind. (Kinda like the government.....)

Well I'm not exactly young I'm 41. But older at heart haha. Well from what my instructor told me they started micro managing everything, with cameras, randomly following drivers, I can't remember if he said they were trying to squeeze him out or not, he was there 15 years. From what it sounded it was that the union was really going down hill and and the turnover rate was going up. The pay isn't great, it's hourly, it's actually a pay cut as far as hourly wages go, but will prob make more when benefits are added and this incentive where they estimate how long your day should be, then if you finish two hours early you still get paid for that two hours. The recruiter I talked to said average was 50,000 per year.

Nick Strimbu Inc. in Brookfield is also Teamsters. I think their reefer division gets the most miles. Keep this company in mind for the future.

Can anyone tell me what is the actual difference between union and non union companies?
Many a times I have heard about the same, but never get to know what is that actually. -
Union will many times put you into a bankrupt pension plan and tell you that pensions are better than 401Ks. One of the largest multi employer pension plans is the Teamsters Central States Pension plan. It is currently 48% funded and projected to be zero percent funded in 10 years.
