Once you get your CDL in Iowa, when you move to TN, youll have to turn in your Iowa and get a TN. Truckers can only have 1 License but yes I moved from GA to TN and all I had to do was surrender GA and they gave me a TN with same endorsements. Once you do that, you can work for any company in any state and keep your TN. as long as you live in TN. If you want to add endorsements to your TN that you dont have with Iowa, you will have to pay an additional fee and take the tests for the endorsements you want.(I think its $16.00 per endorsement).

    Note*

If you work for a company based out of a no state income tax state. Like Tennessee. You can opt to pay tax in that state. Which would be none.

You just need to fill out a price of paper in your state. You get it refunded after paying in your home state all year.

Or... Switch everything find an address claim to live in that state.

Ethier way saves you a couple thousand.

Somin to consider to your advantage.

Same goes for unemployment...you draw it from the state your work in. Not where you live....soooo if you wanna hustle someone go to the higher paying unemployment states.

    ;)

One other note about TN: You will have to prove your Residency in TN (Utility Bills in your name, a Lease Contract in your name, etc.)

That's true. Even if you live with a relative. Download a simple lease off the internet and fill it out that you rent a room with utilities provided.

Only thing is, that wont work in GA. I lived in Ga for 50 Years and had to pay their state income tax. Then when I moved to TN and got on with another company in GA, I still had to pay state Income tax in GA, then file my taxes with GA as a non resident of GA. Didnt get all of my tax back I paid them but got a refund of some of it.

Since you have family in East Tennessee, you may want to consider renting an inexpensive studio apartment in the Knoxville TN area. Have a copy of the lease, a copy of your TN CDL, along with a copy of a utility bill, (gas or electric), and submit to your payroll dept at the trucking company you work for.
Also, you may want to have a bank or credit union account in the Knoxville TN area for your direct deposit. Also, don't forget to register to vote in the Knoxville TN area for federal, state, county, and local elections.
All of this should help you to establish roots as a resident of the state of Tennessee.

Good luck to you! God bless you and your family!

LOL yea if you work for an employer in GA, you are going to pay GA State Income Tax, no matter where you live. Back 13 years ago when I moved from GA, you had to pay Property Tax as well. I was paying about $1,000 a year. When I moved from GA, their sales tax was 6%, TNs was 9 1/2% but time you figure the state income tax in GA (5 1/2%) into the sales tax, I was actually paying more tax in GA. Course I had to pay Property Tax in both states.

From the looks and sounds of things, if a truck driver works for any trucking company based out of Georgia, OTR or LTL, the truck driver is better off being a resident of the state of Georgia.
