So I go to the local DMV office in Virginia and present them with my cdl to try and get it current to restart my trucking career and was told to get my medical card and to come back and they would reinstate my cdl and so this morning I got a new physical/med card done and headed back to the dmv.I waited my turn and filled out the proper paper work and my # was called and I proceeded to think ok this is it I just need to get this done and get my endorsements and I'll be ready for orientation and the clerk behind the desk said because I didn't update my med card 6 months after it had expired that my cdl was no longer any good and I would have to retest/endorsements and do a pre trip and road test and that I would have to provide a tractor to do the road test.My question is are these new rules handed down by the feds or is this a state by state thing?

First I've heard of that; must just be Virginia.
Easiest way is to do a refresher course then you should be ok. Some cdl schools have refresher and some trucking companies have refresher. The most difficult part at the dmv for most people is doing the pre-trip inspection. Some states are real jerks about that and flunk drivers for simple things such as calling an air pressure indicator an air pressure guage or calling a line a hose or visa versa.

We had a driver that went 13 months without self certifiing, his med card and cdl were still valid. Dmv said had either of those expired he would have lost his cdl. He got lucky

Must depend on the state. Another driver on here just had to do a new physical and the renewed his cdl. His physical had been expired for several years.

From what my buddy said it could have gone either way. He had to wait 2 days to talk to the head supervisor. The underlings said he would most likely lose it and have to retest. The supervisor said since his cdl was still valid and since he had a gooded card, he was only guilty of ignorance of the self certification program. Not trying to get around anything... technically 6 months without self certifiing (you can certifiy that you wont maintain a health card) and you lose your cdl. They are working towards a system where in you dont require a hard card, once the system is full up and running, you get your physical, the doctor goes on the dmv site, enters you dl, and puts in the expiration and restrictions, and your good to go. If you self certify that you dont need a health card at the dmv, they put a digital restriction in your file that says as much. The current program is a stepping stone to this fully integrated plan.

My cdl doesn't expire until nov/16 and the only thing that had lapsed was my med card that was last renewed in 2012 so it's been like 3 years. The thing is I had a prehire with Schneider and was checked out and they had the med card appointment set up which I did and then this pops up and now theres not much Schneinder can do says my recruiter that I have to resolve this on my own and then get back in touch.

Did they clip you card? If not id try a different dmv, talk to a supervisor rather than a regular person, never know...

There are two tiers to CDL. Im grandfathered in my state meaning Im no good for T1 commerce of any kind, instate over state lines etc Nothing. I can maybe drive a TT on a farm or as a carnie and that's it. Nothing.

Tier two is for those without any medical card in sight. Those are special sworn affidavit filed to Uncle Sam for purpose of being called up to haul dead bodies by truckload if we ever suffer a castrosphe in the United States like a nuclear strike, Yellowstone, Cascades quake or asterord etc. That phone will ring.

That is one reason I finally turned in my cdl not long ago. THAT plus medical reasons due to the schedule III and II medicines I have to take. Dont need a federal case of it when I miss a stop sign or speed.

The one thing I have not looked into is a private A. That will be a bridge to cross when I get there.

Im gonna do that I think saturday at another dmv and see what happens because the dmv person I was dealing with told me I even had to retest on all my endorsements that I had in the past to bring my cdl current along with a pre trip and road test .Sounds like this person is not very knowledgeable .If they tell me no go on my reinstatement Im gonna speak with a supervisor.

Can you recommend a driver refresher course offered by a respected company Chinatown?I started with Swift years ago and don't want to go there even if they offered free courses.
