I retired from the Army after 25 years and I'm currently in Truck Driving School, graduate next week...I was considering TMC based on some research........Someone made the comment yesterday that I'm probably too old to do flatbed work.......I'm 52.....good mobility, great health......now I'm concerned it may not be for me......your thoughts?

Nah, not even close. There's guys well into their 60's still running skateboards. As long as you're in good health and relatively active you should be okay. Although TMC does a lot of tarping, so you may end up hating tarps after awhile...lol
Thanks for your service, and good luck!Starboyjim, G13Tomcat and rachi Thank this. -
Look at Rinaudo out of Jacksonville FL. They have more options than TMC.
That TMC koolaid must be good. They pull the same stick and brick loads as every other entry level carrier, pay tge same, yet demand drivers perform stupid pet tricks to work there. I could see doing the pet tricks if TMC was on the top, but theyre a bottomfeeder. You cant be the cream of the crop if you're scavenging rookies from driving school.Starboyjim, Thull, Toomanybikes and 7 others Thank this. -
I am 59. I am too old to flatbed. But I have had a hard life. When I was young we had to walk to school up hill everyday. We had nothing to eat unless we killed it ourselves. Our telephones had a rotary dial. We only had 3 television Channels. We dreamed of men walking on the moon. And of course Elvis wasn't fat.

You're not too old for flatbed, but keep in mind at 52 it takes longer to heal if you do get hurt. I recommend tankers. Several good tanker outfits hire GA drivers right out of cdl school. You'll make more money in tankers. @Birdman803
I went with a flatbed company when I was about your age and really liked it. My problem is I couldn't lift lumber tarps; seems like they weighed 150 lbs. Had to get a forklift driver to set them on top of the load for me. I lived in Nashville at the time and we hauled lots of lumber out of California back to the east coast. Wish I'd gone to tankers earlier in my career though because it's easy money and big paychecks.Last edited: Jun 23, 2016

Im 47 and love flatbedding. I recently hired a van driver from usa trucks who at 53 started driving flatbed and he enjoys it much more than the vans.
Mudguppy Thanks this. -
My dad is 58 drives a refer, has to help unload most of his loads. I tried to convince him to do flats, but he says he's too old. I know he can work rings around me, but it is what it is. Don't underestimate your self. If your retired from the army that tells me you are still on shape. You'll just have to take your time at first and condition your body to do the job
