That is defiantly an ear with a pin and the pin keeper is still there, so I'm going with tear off.
    Very bad day indeed.
What brand of trailers is it?
Looks like a spreader bar to me. I have never seen a spreads bar that has big enough lugs and pins in my opinion. They always appear built for the pin on axles and the spreader bar is an afterthought that not enough engineering went into considering the forces at play.
A trailer built for an actual booster always has bigger lugs and ears than that, and I have not yet seen one ripped off. This is the third spreader bar I've saw break away, and I'm actually surprised that I haven't seen more...
    Bad day, poor guy.

This is exactly what happened. Coming thru the steep dip the stinger took all the weight and sheared the pad eyes off the trailer. It's repairable but an expensive fix. A fairly experienced driver would have seen the forces about to happen and stopped to leg the weight off the stinger until the other side. I broke a booster completely in half on a steep driveway when I first started.

Dye Guardian and Oxbow Thank this.

Looks like a Fontaine spreader to me so I'd assume a Fontaine trailer. I agree about the lugs not being heavy enough, I've always preferred a west coast trailer with a coffin box over a pin on crowd type booster. I do like Canadian oilfield type crowd boosters with the hooks I've owned several and had them in bad spots and never broke one off. In fact I built an adapter for my trailkings to take that style booster but I always worry about the lugs on the trailer.

Volunteered to work Sunday, took a pneumatic roller to El Campo, then on the way back he told me to stop in Rosenburg and bring this to a new job on 288 south. Just went back out to drop my 4th axel once I added all the weight together, 118k gross

Yeah in case anyone hadn't noticed, I don't have a very high opinion of spreader bar boosters. I think they are OK for a single axle, but more than one, they aren't built strong enough.
On another note, not a Big Load per se, but a little cooling system maintenance...

@truckdad, haven't seen you around in a few days. I hope everything is ok - did you get your new tractor?

Yes. It's getting outfitted now. Wet kit and ramps. I'm on Tahoe on the stern wheeler now. More later.

That's right by me. The shop is in North Branch which is the next town south. Let me know when you'll be up that way and I'll see what I've got going on.
