^^ ps: not mine, but ain't she purty? Cat has the cool shiny ones,
    LoL!
And yeah, as China said, just do like you are doing; you will get the feel for it, and become one with it. It happens. Easier than slammin and jammin doors, ripping them off, etc etc etc. Sure you know what I mean there, too!
Yeah, cool break for CMac. You will get YOURS if you stick to this.... guarantee.

For trip planning I seriously recommend getting a Rand McNally or whatever brand of truck gps. And punching the route into google maps. Then compare what those two give you to the Qualcomm. if you set the gps on fastest route, it'll almost always give you a route on interstates or very decent state routes (not always, she's routed me on some crazy roads for 10-20 miles to keep me on the interstate for longer before).
Google maps will give you 2-3 options. Not truck legal, but the vast majority of the trip will be. Except the very beginning and very end of trip, RM and google maps match 95% of the time.

Then see what crazy ### route Jill has in her brain for the day. Main thing I look for here is whether other routes will take me on toll roads that Schneider doesn't pay for or if they're more than 10% longer (aka 500 mile trip on Jill should be less than 550 miles on what you pick). Then see where she has you get off the interstates and look at differences.

Example: NJ to PA/OH Jill doesn't believe that 76 exists. She'll do wild crazy to get you to not take that interstate. Schneider pays that toll and the nj turnpike tolls. it's usually less than 5% longer and WAY faster (extra few hours usually) to not listen to her.

This all takes 5 minutes of your time before you go and saves you a whole lot of time during the trip. And it's usually way less stressful since interstate instead of crazy of the day. Heard a story recently about her routing a guy on 33 through WV instead of 64 even though it only saved 6 miles total.

And with a rand McNally you can search for rest areas/truck stops while you're on the move with a click of a couple buttons. Around you, on route, destination.. Makes it really awesome when you've two hours left and can see all the things coming up in the next 100 miles.

Keep writing! I keep tossing flatbed or tanker or reefer around in my head (box is boring... And they pay more) and it's awesome to see what id be getting myself into if I went to the bulk division from van.

Oh. And forgot to add. The reroute button on Jill gives you a truck legal route. Always. She still screws up as usual once in a while, but it's just as truck legal as if you'd punched it in when stopped. Found that out when I was going down a road empty that was rated for 56k. She went ####### and when hitting reroute she came up with "you're not on a truck legal road".
Saved me 20 miles each way going to pick up and empty and come back to shipper. Well worth it.

My trip planning consisted of getting the basic route to wherever i was going, then firing up TruckerPath on my smartphone (get this app if you have one, it will be your best friend) and going to the truck stop that was 500 miles or so from wherever i was currently at, shorter if i only had a 1 day trip, etc.

the app will tell you how far you currently are from the truck stop you select, so you don't need to pull out a map, truck stop book, etc to figure out distance.

Not sure which way you went but the way I would go is:
US 59 from Houston all the way up to Texarkana (Jill will route you off 59 to save a few miles, don't)
Take 369 around Texarkana to I-30
    I-30 to Little rock
440 around Little Rock to US 67N
stay on US 67 N all the way until you hit I-55 in MO near Festus. From there just head North until you see the Arch!

I didn't use a gps my first few months driving for SNBC, I used maps, the routing info through the qualcomm (not sure if that still exists with workflow) and calling shipper/recievers for the last mile directions. It helped a lot, you figure out real fast what the best way to get someplace is, not the way the gps wants you to go.

Man today was not a Pleasant one! Oh my where do I start. So I wake up this morning I'm an hour away from the receiver. I head there & when I'm like within the last few miles I miss my turn! Dang it! So I had to fight some St. Louis traffic to get turned around. So 30 minutes later I'm back in route & I make my turn on the street. I see a neighbor hood but nothing in my head clicked to say "Hey maybe we shouldn't be going this way". I mean after all the Qualcomm is routing me this way so it has to be the RIGHT Way! LOL. I soon find this to be so untrue. I get on this neighbor hood street & when I tell you it's tight as idk what! There were cars parked on both sides of the street like as if you were in a downtown area. There was also so tree cutter guys cutting trees with their lil man lift truck on the road. I couldn't see this before I went into the neighborhood be cause it was an angle you had to make to get in there. So once I see all this all I could think in my head was "well I'm F*****!" Then to make matters worse people start gathering outside & just staring & complaining at me. All I hear is "You DONT belong here!" "This road is NOT for your trucks!" "Back up & get out of here!" "Are you stupid or something?" My nerves were BAD BAD!! I was almost about to start cursing everyone out & shut the hell up. All I couldn't think in my head was man I'm F*****! I was thinging maybe I should call the police & have them escort me out because no way could I have backed up by myself, for one my backing stinks & for 2 the roads were too narrow. So I didn't end up calling them but a few neighbors started to move their cars out of the way. The tree trimmer guys also moved their truck closer to the curb which was too much help. I was able to squeeze & I do mean SQUEEZE through the neighbor hood just barely. I mean I may have had a foot between my truck & some of the other parked cars on side the road on each side. Man I was SO NERVOUS! All I could think was please don't hit anything! The street wasn't that long & I mean the small little "plant" if that's what you want to call it was literally 30 seconds from when you exit the neighborhood. I'm so glad I didn't have to Go a long distance. So I finally get there & the customer unloads the product. I leave to check out with the guard & she gives me a map (highlighted Google map) with how to exit out. She told me "oh we've been doing this 30 years". So I followed the map, it took you behind the neighborhood which was right by a railroad track & when I saw the road & instantly thought to myself "Man I'm pretty sure a truck should NOT be on this road"! But after all the customer lady gave me the map & assured me it's been done for "30 years" so this MUST be the right way to go right? WRONG! I creep & creep & creep truck leaning to the side, which I'm glad I was empty cause had I been loaded I probably would have rolled over. I get to the end of the street to a stop sign & this man comes running outside aggressively & comes to my truck & says "WTF!" "YOU DONT BELONG HERE!" "THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY!" "I'm sick of you dang trucks tearing up my concrete back here!" I give all you truckers ONE warning the next time I'm calling DOT! I just simply apologized to him & said my bad I was given directions to come this way, sorry for the misunderstanding but WONT happen again because I'm not bring my Black behind back to St. Louis no more ! I was so dang frustrated man. I'm thinking in my head that if she had been telling people to take this route for "30 years" or so she says then why in the hell was this such a surprise to the people here???. Man I hauled butt to get out of St. Louis! Headed to Chicago to drop my empty trailer to be cleaned at the Qualawash. I had to sit thru Chicago traffic, so I'm sure some of you know how fun that is. Now I've made it to the Qualawash with no time left on my clock so I'm staying here for the night. Can you say MISERIBLE! From now on I will definitely start trip planning because had I trip planned this would NOT have been a surprise to me & probably could have been avoided. Had I used google maps satellite view to see where I was delivering to I would have seen this. NEVER AGAIN! I will use google maps from now on to get a good visual where I am going & how I should enter then I will check this back to the Qualcomm as well as a MAP! I found out the HARD way but I will definitely NOT be putting all of my trust into that Qualcomm anymore, which I shouldn't have from the beginning. I appreciate all the advice you guys give me & believe me I will be taking it. I'm new in the game & im still learning so it's a process. But I appreciate all of you who follow & give me advice on my journey! Thanks for listening!

Some people look for reasons to whine & cry, like the guy saying you're on private property. If he really cared he would put signs there or a gate with a sign on it.
