    Since I had to get up early to hit a 7am delivery time that was really 7am to 3pm.....:banghead:

    I'll be hitting the bunk soon as I'm just plain worn out. Night, all. Safe and many miles!

    Hi. I am just a rookie looking for a long term home/career. I have enjoyed reading this thread. Most everyone here seems big-hearted and genuine, which seems to be hard to find these days. Abilene seems like a fine company that anyone would be lucky to be employed at. I was wondering if any driver had the time and inclination to answer a few questions:

    1. Can you take hometime away from your current address? For example, if I live in Pennsylvania, could I take hometime in Texas by parking at a truckstop for a few days (as long as a load could get me there) and renting a car to visit friends/family?

    2. When you guys run so hard (600 plus miles on some days) and run out your 11, how do you find parking? Or, under those circumstances, do you simply park on an off/on ramp?

    3. Can you drive a bit cautious, watch your speed, not violate your HOS, leave adequate time to find parking, and still remain in good standing with Abilene? Or must you always press your clock/hours to the absolute limit? (I would prefer to be safe and cautious with my speed and finding safe parking than try to always push and try to grab extra miles)

    4. What is your favorite thing about working for Abilene? And your least favorite?

    Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer these questions. I understand if everyone is simply too busy, or if these rookie questions just aren't interesting or pertinent.
    Please accept my thanks for already providing such an informative and interesting thread. It has already proven helpful and it's good to know that there are sincere, caring people out there in the trucking world. Take care.

    @dinosaur jr

    1. Yes.
    2. We are a resourceful bunch. Walmarts, ramps, truck stops, rest areas, some of our shippers/receivers.
    3. You are the captain of your ship. Not everyone drives their complete time every day.
    4. Fav-kind of a toss up. The ability to be home when I need to be and the nice equipment for when I'm not. Least fav-communication in the office.

    RC nailed it, especially the lack of communication. Then a strong second, lack of preplanning. But don't let the negative deter your choice to come aboard. This is a good place to work, my problem is after 38 years of this nonsense, I sometimes think I earned the right to be a little jaded. Keep the questions coming, we got the answers!

    @dinosaur jr ... I can answer #1. I'm also from PA. I have no home at all anymore. I'll take time off where ever I want so long as it's within our lanes. CA is one of my favorite places to take a few days, rent a hog and cruise the along the beaches. I also love much of MT and the Missouri river for the same thing. There are many places I have in mind.

    As I'll be starting tomorrow, I have much to learn about where we go and what opportunities I may have. But as far as it being "ok" ... I've been told it's no problem taking home time where I like. :)

    I appreciate your response. It seems we have a lot in common, as far as our pasts go. I wish you the best of luck on your new start.
