Tie downs have to be adjustable by the driver. I've known wrecker drivers that have gotten hassled for using the winch to tighten the chains in the rear of a car, and straps in the front.

With that being said, trucks go down the road like that everyday.

Awesome. Buying or just within your company? 386 I assume?

At 15000# per tank, and 1500 gallon capacity, I'd hope not! lol

I'll catch some flak for asking this, but does anybody ever secure differently if they're going 10 miles up the road?

I can't think of a time where I purposely used LESS than needed just because I was staying local. I know I tend to use MORE than necessary when I'm going 500-1000 miles.

As others have pointed out, it's nice to have short chains for equipment. Long chains for freight. It's annoying to try to have both for all freight, at all times.

I prefer to carry 16 binders and 10 chains. It gives you options.

Some do, but I wouldn't and never did. The same rules apply whether you're going 10 miles or 1000.

You can use long chains for equipment if it has a hook on both ends. Just use two binders and leave the slack in the middle.

I've done that, thanks. It's annoying to wrap up the slack. The last mini-x Mac posted, sure, short chain it with 2 binders and a 20' chain (per side). But you have 12-15' feet of slack to wrap up.

At least if you have more binders than chains, you can short chain a lot and still meet minimum WLL. Sucks not having enough binders
