Question about team driving

The 40% is total driver pay meaning it would be divided between the two of you. If my math is correct you and your co-driver would split $2540 for each 5k miles you run. It comes out to roughly 50 cpm split (25 cpm each driver) Not the worst I guess.

 

It's 25cpm for ALL miles the truck rolls. So even if you're in back sleeping you're still earning 25 cents per mile. There are companies paying as much as 60 cpm split (30 cpm per driver) but they usually require a Haz-mat endorsement.

 

Yeah, that's how team pay is split. You each earn half the total miles (or total driver revenue).

 

I actually just looked up something myself last night about team-driver pay and yeah, once I read that it was all rolled miles regardless of driver and since team-driving allows it to legally move for (i think?) 24 hours so it's actually doubled total mileage compared to a solo.... It made a heck lot more sense as I had the same initial reaction as yours, haha!!

 

If you have a good team gig the miles and pay are better than solo. I ran a coast to coast team, usually with drop and hooks at one or both coasts, and a 34 hour reset in LA every weekend. That was on a dedicated fleet, meaning we were hauling for one customer.

I've also done team without any drop and hooks, all live loads and live unloads. That sucked. We averaged 16000 miles a month, not doubling the work of a solo driver. Make sure the company you sign up with has dedicated lanes and preferably drop and hooks.

Split the day into 12 hour shifts. Maintain a regular sleep schedule, even on your off days and even if that means you stay up nights and sleep during the day. If your company can keep you rolling you jam as much driving into a 12 hour shift as you can.

 

Been teaming 8 years and it is not all roses that's for sure. Companies want team trucks rolling. Our loads are planned for 58 mph and the first 300 or so miles are in Cali at 55 mph. A large portion of miles are on a US hwy with little towns with 25 -35 mph speed limits. No time for showers barely time to pee. I drove anywhere from 300 - 500 miles a week more than co-driver. I do all the paperwork as well. He does the heavy work like hooking doubles. The good thing is 2 days off each week at home. If you want to shower and have a sit down meal everyday be careful where you team , LTL does not give you time.
