So I have a stop on Friday that you have to back in off of the street it's not like the worst ever except when traffic flares up then it can be a real problem a problem big enough to where sometimes traffic will not let you even perform the maneuver. Anyhow last Friday I tried to back in off the street and eventually got it, but I had to wait for 3-4 red light cycles before someone gave me a break.
Now this Friday wasn't as bad, I was able to get through a light which then turned Red after I got through it that stopped traffic I immediately set up to back and started backing, also I had the trailer occupying the curb lane the whole time couldn't get around me which was perfect the previous Friday I didn't have the trailer occupying the curb lane and that was my mistake. The key is though get that trailer so it's in the lane and people can't get around you.
See actually backing in off the street is fine when your going against the flow of traffic, because it's a sight side back and at the same time you can come head on into traffic, but backing in off the street with the flow of traffic isn't that easy and I don't care for it, but we get it done all the same.

I have to do that every day. 3 times a day. I have to time a red light just perfect so I can do my approach and start to back before all the traffic comes flying down at me. Its a delivery on Western Ave in Cihcago. Not for the faint of heart Western Ave and Fullerton to be exact
JReding, stayinback, Puppage and 3 others Thank this. -
I only have one like that, out of all my stores, and we are not allowed to back off the street per company policy, so yea......
Anyway, I had some doing regional & OTR that are extraordinarily F for blocking a busy street.
My best advice is just take the whole the street. If you need to, pop the brakes and get out and actually speak or signal to the most courteous people, please wait one minute sir / ma'am, I so appreciate it. That's what I've done.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
I used to pick up at a place on Jefferson Hwy in Kenner, LA where I had to back in off the street. I'd have to blare my horn, come across the grass median and under the power lines driving like a crazy man. The traffic would stop just long enough for people to say, "What the hell is that guy doing?"
I'd set up to back and just do it. If they went behind me, they better use their gas pedal. People generally don't want to get run over. They'll quit going around when it gets too close and they see you aren't stopping.
On the other hand, if you're trying to be polite by waiting for all the traffic, you're gonna be there a looong time.skinnytrucker and Mike2633 Thank this. -
We have one in McKeesport, PA that can get interesting at certain hours of the day. Time the light, grab the "R" gear, close your eyes and go for it. It's easy doing it "sight side", blindside can get interesting.

Capital Drive WI 190 in Milwaukee, 6 lanes, have to have doors open and park in curb lane, and hop front bumper over the median about halfway up the taper to line up, trying to block both ways at once, sometimes have to wait several light cycles from both ways to attempt.
Got a compliment about how easy I made it look.
Tried lots of ways, now I take a left and 3 rights to get headed in the right direction. Not trying it blindside.
Works better before the rush, but can't get there until 10 or later after 3 previous drops, all of which take time.
Construction makes it even more interesting.
Next drop is occasional on a cul-de-sac off Mequon Rd.
Was blindsiding back into that but tried going wrong way 100 feet to back in sight side, and decided to just drive in and turn around by backing into a wider side driveway.
John Morreale off Halsted was a real joy until they got the bridge that is part of the Hubbard Tunnel finished on 90/94 near the circle.
We no longer go there, but do go to Bridgeford east of Peoria south of the Lake St. El. Just south.
Fulton Market is winding down, urban renewal at work, but I have backed a 53 into Nealy's dock unassisted by a spotter. Sat across the street many times at their neighbor's.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
I have a car dealer where this is an issue. I was there friday. Thankfully there's a center turn lane I can park in and wait for an opportunity.

I don't know how you delivery drivers stay calm working Chicago, NYC, etc... all day long.
My first month behind the wheel solo I had to deliver a sprinter van to a dealership downtown Chicago.
Of course this #### dealership was open at 9pm on a Friday night. Must be a Chicago thing...
Single lane into the dealership, and here's my rookie mistake, I pulled in nose first and got stuck.
I've since learned backing in off the street is a much better recipe than backing out onto the street. Honestly would've been better to block the right lane for 20 minutes and unload the van in the street.
Anytime I'm nervous about something now though I've got that hellish experience to look back on, I made it out of that clean with only 1 month under my belt, helps me keep a cool head when the pressure comes on.Mike2633 Thanks this.
