    Hi, I really need advice.
My husband received his CDL 5 years ago. He worked with USA Truck after receiving his CDL and worked for them for 3 months when he had an accident/rollover with no injuries. He was terminated from his job. He tried looking for work soon after but he was told he would have to sit out the accident for 5 years and he did. We are located in New York.

He recently started trying to get back into trucking. He went to Western Express and Celadon but it didn't work out. He also tried KLLM Transport for a refresher course and everything was going good. They did his background check and verified his employers. Finally last minute they called and said they couldn't take him because he didn't have 3 months recent experience. He let them know his situation from the beginning so I'm not sure why they put his hopes up.

We have contacted around 15 companies today asking whether they have a refresher course with no luck. They turned him down because either he didn't have recent driving experience or because he had an accident 5 years ago which we thought would no longer be a problem.

What do you guys suggest he do? Should he pay for a refresher course and then try looking for a company or what other options does he have. Thank you in advance.

My opinion is not really based on experience but he should apply to companies with the idea of going through the training as a Newbie and relearn everything. Not just a refresher but the whole nine yards. A rollover is one of the major wrecks that folks are really nervous about. Just don't let him get too discouraged.

I though about him restarting and wondered if the reason he kept getting turned down is because he was specifically asking for a refresher course.

If all and I mean all companies will not hire him Carolina Cargo is a second chance company. Hardly any money but will get some experience with no issues and go from there.

Try calling some schools in the area and see if they have a refresher course, and then call some companies and see if they will accept it.
Other than that he will likely need to start from scratch. He might find someone to hire him on a 1099 or such, but if he is really trying to start over those places will end up screwing with his career by overwork ("I don't care about your hours make it work or we'll fire you and say you abandoned the truck") or poor equipment ("I don't care the tires are at 1/32, I'll get them replaced sometime") and the like.

Freymiller will probably hire him. Ignore what it says on any trucking company website and do the online applications. Many companies are bending their own hiring rules these days, so get busy doing applications online. If there's no online app. then just call, but most companies have online applications.

    Freymiller
    Transport America
    Abilene Motor Express
    May Trucking Company
    PI&I Motor Express
    TransAm
    Western Express
    Navajo Express
    Celadon
    Magnum Ltd.
    Paschall Truck Lines

Do the online applications before any phone calls.

Since he drove within the last ten years Schneider would take him. No sure how they'd look at the roll over though. He can always try. Best of luck.

Carolina Cargo would have hired him the same day USA Truck fired him.
Too bad he wasn't on this forum back then; he wouldn't have missed a days work.

There's a company in New York he should also try: Eastern Freightways
