Hey gang - I am in a pretty unique situation and could use your guidance.
I have a 2017 Western Star that I am converting to look like Optimus Prime from the movie Transformers. It is not being used for a business and will not be used in hauling of any kind. I will never trailer anything, and don't use it to move people or goods. It is a truck that I own (or make payments on). I will be taking it to trade shows and comic conventions for fans to enjoy. No commercial or monetary gain of any kind. And if I do, any proceeds will go right to charity.
This is an untapped area when it comes to the DOT rules and regulations. Yes it is a commercial truck that's over 10,000 lbs, but it is not being used in interstate commerce. It is truly just like a personal vehicle.
So what are the rules here? For one, I don't THINK I need a DOT number. Do I? Two, what about things like fuel stickers for any states I drive through? Do I need them?
I do intend to stop at weigh stations just in case. But it's really a gray area that I can't find much information on. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
And please... spare the unsolitced comments about what I am doing or how stupid you might think I am for doing it. I just want to make sure I am following the rules of the road. Thanks!
Very unique situation - dot rules?

Three words
"NOT for HIRE" is to be marked in very large and legible colors easily seen across a whole interstate from the chiken cook all the way across.
Since you are no longer a commercial vehicle why in the world are you stopping at the scales with your PERSONAL vehicle hhmmmm?
It's VERY common.
Many states make you take the third axle for tax purposes so you are down to a two axle tractor to make sure you aint gonna be moonliting.
No one is going to tell you anything for being stupid. It's not about that.
Many truckers live out thier days in a sleeper truck that they once made a living in. Take away the 5th wheel or hook it to a camper trailer and poof. RV. Put a chemical ballast toilet in there for Humans, POOF it's now a RV.Dominick253, John Drury and Florida Playboy Thank this. -
Private recreational vehicle..... Gets you around almost all the dot crap.
Metalshadow, x1Heavy, Dominick253 and 5 others Thank this. -
Which leaves Airbrake endorsement and I think even Emissions testing should you be that fortunate.
In my State we don't bother much because the tractors are already certified.John Drury Thanks this. -
Wasn't Optimus Prime a Pete?
spyder7723, bzinger and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I thought he was a KW.
I knew I should have had kids. People throw around these things I know nothing about LOL. -
Thanks guys. The old Optimus was a Pete I believe. The newest model is the western star 5700.
x1Heavy - I figured stopping at the scales was a requirement for any big rig. Plus I felt it would be easier to stop their and explain my situation (if asked) vs passing the scale and trying to explain it to a pissed off officer who is wondering why I just blew by the scales.x1Heavy and Waggledaddy Thank this. -
Just register it as RV
John Dewart and John Drury Thank this. -
IIRC Optimus Prime could kick any LEO's hiney. So what's the worry?
Metalshadow, John Dewart, Bob Dobalina and 2 others Thank this. -
I'm wondering if you would still need a class A or B to drive it?
