I would advise against it, due to the fact that birds are far more sensitive to fumes and odors than other pets. Diesel exhaust stinks, as well as diesel itself. My GF won't even allow scented candles to be burned on the same floor of the house her bird is in. Emerald conure, he's a little a-hole.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm always glad to hear everybody's opinions both good and bad. From the companies I have looked at they have newer trucks and APUs and as strange as it sounds birds are really great at managing temperature so he will be good in weather

Does anybody have opinions on Jim Palmer/Prime/Wil-Trans ?? They are the ones with a driver school/ eventual pet policy I have seen.

@KleeTrucking. Please give details as to why you would discourage it?
I know you can be on the road for weeks on end. it has always been a dream of mine for some reason. I don't have a wife/or kids. So it really seems like a great opportunity.

You Sir, have a very good point. I almost feel bad as a bird owner for not thinking about that. I am usually a little too cautious about that stuff.

does fumes come in to the truck at all??

What if it gets out of the cage and starts pecking on your head while your driving? Might not be too safe.

Ha ha ha, very valid concern. He is a really good traveler and we have gone many places, even camping. Most times he just sits on my shoulder. I'm actually going to take him on a trip from Utah to Cali to meet some friends in a couple months.

I'd be concerned about temperature extremes with an animal that can't readily jump out and walk around with you.

I'd pick Jim Palmer as first choice.. You can run coast to coast or regional. Trucks are full size and set up right for driver & pet with APU.

Prime trucks are small with very little to no storage. Wil-Trans owns Jim Palmer, but stays in the eastern states. Go with Jim Palmer!

No fumes in the truck. Keep the windows up and use the APU while on breaks.
