So many guys out here think that the megas have a monopoly, they don't. But that's exactly what they want you to believe.

That's true. There's lots of data out there to prove the fact. Also, trucking tonnage is estimated to keep increasing.

"There are more than 1.3 million interstate motor carriers in the United States, of which 34.6 percent are for-hire motor carriers.For-hire carriers provide freight transportation services to the general public. An additional 53.2 percent of motor carriers are private fleets, carriers whose primary business is not hauling freight but transporting goods in support of their primary business, such as retail (Wal-Mart) or food and beverage (Frito-Lay). Ya but that doesn't really answer the question about how many of those for hire carriers are 1 to 5 truck outfits. It also includes all those bus companies. Guess what I'm saying is when i think trucking company, i will include walmart and grocery stores cause they do load product at shippers, but not the local construction company that operates a truck or two to move their equipment around. Heck even mobile cranes have to have a dot#. And they certainly aren't competing with me for loads.

I'd be really curious to find out real numbers of of the small 1 to 5 truck outfits hauling freight for a living compared to the vast numbers of trucks operated by 50+ truck fleets.

I personally know at least 10 guys that are independents with only 1 truck...theirs.

A lot of this is anecdotal anyways. Are you an independent?

Nope. I suspended my authority several years back and leased to a carrier i had a solid relationship with.
But what does that have to do with the question? I'm interested in data on lots of different subjects. I'm not an astronomer yet i enjoy reading data about or universe.

Not really, but i don't search that hard. Call it a casual interest. It's why i asked for a source to the stat provided, so i could do further reading.
