I'm trying to figure out what I will need, aside from the truck itself. I'm thinking a flashlight, a good pair of boots, or perhaps a pair of sweatpants and shower shoes, but seriously, what are some helpful items I should have?

    LindaPV Thanks this.

Tank top, sweat pants, flip flops and a gold chain to wear around your neck. As big of a chain as possible. Headset (this is a permanent addition once you become a truck driver. You must sleep and shower in it from that point on).

Big hammer. if something breaks, beat with hammer until problem is solved. It worked in Armageddon on a space shuttle. The truck is not as complicated.

First aide I will leave to you but a basic one from Walmart will be just fine.
Basic tools would be a Phillips and flathead screwdriver. Crescent wrench and a few basic box end wrenches. Star and Allen wrench set as most 50 in the cab use these type of screws. Basically it can all be bought for under $20 at any Walmart also. Hammer; of course. And gloves. . . get the WalMart 3 to a pack ones in case they get too greasy, but they are very helpful.
I'll add more as it comes to mind, but tool-wise, hope that helps. Needlenose pliers have helped me in a 'pinch' as well; no pun intended.
    More later....
    sorry!

    Spyke and alghazi Thank this.

Yeah, the stuff I didn't think of for the 1st aid kit. . . very good.

ps: HE already said shower shoes; and he's got steel-toed boots. I wear mine ALLDAY everyday. The boots, LoL.

What else are we missing here? I haven't been OTR in over 6 years; wife's gonna do it in the Spring...she'll learn to hate, LoL.
Add to the list... i'm rusty, and needing a NAP! LoL

    Ok serious response then.

I carry a case or two of bottled water and some random canned food in case of emergency.

3lb sledge from lowes. Fits perfectly in tandem holes and works well for thumping tires and stuck tandem pins.

Locking pliers. For when the tandem handle doesn't want to stay in place. And other uses.

All sorts of screwdrivers. They come in useful for too many situations.

A floor broom. Menards has some that unscrew and lock onto the handle, makes it easy to stick it in the fairing holes behind the cab. And it's like $10. Compared to $20 tractor supply one that came off the clips and I ended up with just a handle... Anyway, good for sweeping trailer. For reefer there are some special brooms that truck stops sell.

I've a bunch of other tools that are handy at times, but then I just emptied my tool box into the truck.

What @G13Tomcat said for plastic ware and all the other suggestions. Get paper or foam plates, they're so much easier than washing dishes.

Overall, bring yourself and buy stuff as you go. Almost all lowes, Menards, walmarts etc allow parking for a bit to buy stuff. Get things as you realize you could use them.

G13Tomcat, Spyke and Dominick253 Thank this.
