    Hi All,

I wanted to get a post going specifically related to DEF system issues across all engine platforms, and OEM's. We have a relatively large fleet of commercial vehicles. These vehciles all range form 2012 to 2016, and we own Kentworth, Freightliners, Mack, International, and Westeren Star Class 8 trucks. Its seems to drive our techs , and our drivers crazy that we constantly seeing issues with these new DEF systems. Recently we have been seeing DEF Injector issues at around 180,000 miles. They have been clogging up and not dosing which leads to codes, and our drivers being placed in derate situations. We also have seen good amount of DEF Filter clogging issues, and some DEF Pump issues as well. What problems has everyone else been seeing with there DEF Systems on there vehicles? What is the most common emission related component that you have seen fail over the life of your vehicle? Please feel free to break the failure down by component, and list what steps you had to take to figure out the issue. Also have you guys noticed specific injector issues upon inspection (clogged injector, melted electrical connectors, short to ground, etc). Thanks for everyone's help and time, I hope we can get some useful information to all of our fellow drivers based off this forum.

    THANKS,

    MB - Midwest Trucker!!!!!!!

DEF injectors clogging would be number 1, on Macks we have seen DEF pump failures around the 450- 550.000 mark. Nox sensors are a common failure. Loss of communication with ACM or J1939 problems on the bus that connect acm, Nox sensors and VGT will cause a derate also. Some trucks will go longer with an active code than others before derate. We seem to have the most derate problems with Mack MP7's and 8's. Cummins ISX 15l seems to be a bit more forgiving

We have had very similar issues with our fleet. I'm really trying to more so understand why these issues are coming up, or what induces these failure modes, instead of just throwing parts at our vehicles, this crap gets expensive when not under warranty. What mileage is everyone seeing these DEF injector failures?????

We haven't had any emissions related issues with any of our trucks. Of course the newest one is a 1996.

Off topic.. but I have to agree. 2007 386 with C15 and DPF did nothing but cause problems. Now in a 2005 with a 2004 acert.. no dpf, no egr. Very reliable truck.

I'd rather throw money at an older truck. At least I can see and understand when something simply wears out. Throwing good money after bad at something that simply does not work reliably is bad business in my opinion.

Our trucks are old but to be honest, we aren't mainly a trucking company and our trucks see few miles. That helps us being able to run the older stuff.

We have a 1994 FL that was bought new and it has less than 300,000 miles on it. We've also got a 1983 FL that we don't use much anymore, it has less than 500,000 miles.

We just bought a 1995 Pete that has 2 million miles. Pretty much everything mechanical has been replaced at some point so it's a pretty good truck.

As long as I can hold out, I'll stay with everything 1999 or older.

def injectors clogging partially depends on how clean the engine runs/ how much def gets sprayed continously. Software to activate the pump and injector so you can check def pump pressure and injector spray volume versus time is a big help in figuring out what is causing your issues

I have 2011 Volvo d13 900k miles it’s in derate now code 5394 fm 5 says scr system fault before it derated when the check engine comes on I used to flush the fuel water separator filter and wait ten minutes the. The light goes off and drives normal for 200 miles or so then happens again last time it happened I tried the same thing but didn’t work this time and the engine derated I noticed the def gage is at 3/4 full after tons of driving makes me think that the def is not being pumped mechanic not sure if it’s the def pump I changed the dower last week but the issue remains any help please ??? Thanks so much guys
