I've been a dock worker dealing with Inbound trailers at Estes for over 8 years. I finally found something better and gave my two weeks notice.
My two weeks are over.. I went in today and picked up my check for my last week there. It is for 14 cents!!
I called Payroll:
"You took paid vacation in June. We *front* you the paid vacation. If you don't work to your next anniversary date,we take the money back".
I put 8 years in. I had 2 weeks coming in May. I took part of it in June. ...enough to void 37hrs worth of pay if I didn't work till next May. I worked the last week for 14 cents.
Wow! If you didn't know this,you do now!

I have yet to find anyone in person who has ever heard of this. ....and believe you me... I'm telling everyone!!
Most people say: "It's yours. You earned it."
Others: "I've been in jobs where they actually pay you for your vacation time you had saved."
I have texted many old co-workers at the Estes terminal I worked at for those 8+ years. No one has heard of it,either. They do now!

You know,I could sit here and bash-bash-bash about many other things,but I'm not gonna do that.
...and yes,I do have a CDL-A with doubles,triples,tank,hazmat,metal coil...
I started there as a dock worker to check the place out. Then stayed as a dock worker.
I got tired of being OTR for the last company I worked for. I want to be home every day and not deal with nasty dispatchers/load planners who have no regard for your license,DOT rules and safety. -
Sounds like a simple contractual obligation. You were fronted vacation time, loan came due before anniversary. I can't sympathise here.

So in this company you haven't "earned" your vacation time when your anniversary date comes. (At 8 years,it is two weeks)
Instead,it is "fronted" to you so that they may take it back if you find another job before your next anniversary date.

I am an employer and the way it works with my business and any others I know of is vacation time is accrued based on hours worked.
Vacation time is never fronted from my experience.

Simply put. No. As i said it's a fairly common practice. After 1 year you qualify for vacation time, be it 1 week 2 weeks or 6 weeks, whatever, the actual amount doesn't matter for this discussion. But that time isn't actually yours until the 2nd year anniversary. At that date any time you hadn't used up is usually paid or rolled over to the next year. Basically you qualify at the 1 year anniversary date but you don't actually get it until the 2nd year anniversary date.
