Honestly, reefer [at the right place] is the easiest. I can't recommend a place where a lot of drop-hook might take place or doubles work is involved if strength and back issues may be a concern. Dry van can sometimes involve driver assist. Most mid-size refrigerated carriers [that I've dealt with] don't want drivers touching any freight at all, so that's a plus. Main downside to reefer is wait times at shippers and receivers which can be bad one week and non-existent the next.

The longer the average length of haul (coast to coast carrier), the fewer loads/unloads average which makes things easier as you deal with fewer stops/pu's and can optimize drive-time efficiency and schedule to your preference. Shorter hauls mean more BS and lost time.

    But, but...

If you don't like the short runs, than you don't like to work.

If you're 55+ that's all the more reason to exercise regularly. Holding a steering wheel all day will kill you.

Stay away from tanker.Dry van is easy.Only things you'll need to do is open and close trailer doors and hooking and unhooking when you switch or drop trailers in the dock. But keep in mind you do have a physical that you must pass before any trucking job.

    Ooops and tman78 Thank this.

All the more reason trucks didn't need "modernization".

Easy is line haul with a company like Old Dominion; just drop & hook.
Many companies these days are 100% driver no-touch freight and use super nice tractors set up for driver comfort.

I would say base it on equipment and home time... Go with a company that is 100% no touch, and has air release on the 5th wheel and trailer tandems.

I got my CDL at age 59. First job was OTR LTL reefer and unloading my trailer with a manual pallet jack, then breaking down the load on the dock. I did that for a year till I worked off my school tuition. What was your question again?

dtmo, bluerider, tman78 and 2 others Thank this.
