Does the SRA require a battery or phantom power from the radio? "Active noise cancelling" is misleading to me...

No the 198 does not require a battery its just a normal noise canceling mic like the RK56 or Astatic 636.

Has anyone ever had luck with the stock cobra Mic? I have a cobra 25 and a cobra 29, and both of their stock Mics are really quiet. Even on the 29, which is a stock radio, the astatic Mic makes it plenty loud. But when doing tests with the stock Mic's on either radio, the The receiving end needs to crank their volume all the way up to barely hear me.

No the stock mics are junk, you can open them up and remove piece of thin felt that covers element, that may boost the audio somewhat but they are still on the quiet side. Is the AMC (modulation ) turned up on both radios or are they set at factory setting which is probably 85%.

I have both a Cobra 29 NWLTD and 29 LX and have AMC ( vr4) wide open and using the SRA 198 mic audio is loud and crystal clear. Both stock mics were given away to drivers who current mics were breaking up, cutting out or encountering other problems, because I have no use for them.

The 25 is peaked and tuned, but the 29 is stock. In both radios, the astatic noise canceling Mic has powerful and clean audio. In both radios, the stock mic is barely audible. Granted, both of those radios I bought used. But the radios are fine. I find it suspicious that both of those mics are problematic. I'm curious to hear the new Ranger SRA I ordered from Amazon today.

Numerous videos on youtub comparing different mics overall the 198 sounds the best to me. There is one video using a Stryker 955 radio and the 198 sounds excellent on it, and another one using a stock audio Cobra 29 Chrome and once again the 198 sounds really good.

Even if you get a stock stryker 955 mic,not noise cancelling but better than cobra..
I think mark tunes with a 636...I used both on my 955,636 does cause a lil squeel if you crank the talk back,198 doesnt..
