I'm already signed on and begin school at Swift on Monday. They are the company who would give me a chance after a less than perfect life. It's a done deal.

That said, I would love to know all about Swift flatbed division, as I want to get my experience there and put some distance between my past and my future. What can I expect in terms of weekly miles, length of haul, starting salary for a new CDL holder, and in general the supportiveness of the dispatchers and fleet managers for flatbed?

What kind of trucks are they running for the flatbed division? What are the odds of being able to run an average of 3000 miles per week, with slower weeks of 2500 and better weeks of 3400+?

Should I resign myself to 800 dollars gross every week if I am lucky, or do they reward those who don't give a #### about home time?

You might want to check the swift boards o don't think anyone here has ever messed with them. They're a bottom feeder company I wouldn't plan on getting rich.

I got a lot more info about the lack of APU and no inverters being allowed than flatbed info. And catfish are also bottom feeders. I fillet em up and fry em all the same. Just trying to get my experience and put in my time. If they treat me well and he pay climbs over the course of my contract to a level I can live with, maybe I stick with them. Either way, I'm thankful for the opportunity they are giving me. I can't afford to pay for the CDL training(though I did have to get the permit and all of the endorsements and remove all the restrictions myself, prior to being accepted into school... They are basically teaching me how to backup and shift over the next few weeks).

Figured it may be useful to post it in here as well, as some of the folks here may have worked there in the past in flatbed and knew something about it that their reefer and dry van drivers didn't.

I got back into trucking and worked two years pulling dry van at Swift. I made the mistake of starting in dry van, but should have immediately selected flatbed for training. Once I started training in dry van they said I would have to start training all over again for flatbed.

There's a one week load securement class. At the time it wasn't paid, but I think that has changed.

If you are based out of Phoenix or Gary, IN it's easy to get home time. I'm not sure what other terminals would be good.

For western states I know based on talking with a few drivers you can expect some pretty good miles, in the 2800-3300 range per week. Talk to a recruiter about pay rates and accessorial pay, like tarping. I know they received $0.02 per mile more than dry van. I believe the starting pay is in the neighborhood of $0.40 per mile now, maybe a tad less.

Tractors will likely be a Freightliner mid roof once you are solo.

Is anyone else at least slightly nervous about the likes of Swift possibly hauling coils?

Starting pay is .37 cpm flatbed.
Don't worry too much about money. You'll just end up hating life. Trucking is too up and down. One week you might make take home 1500 and the next you only gross 500.

Plan on $35k/year and when you make more you'll be happy instead of filling your head with ideas of $60k and being pissed when it doesn't happen.

That's one of their main legs of the triangle. Big old 48,000 pound 6 foot high single coils. Loaded suicide and bound for Laredo of course.

Corsicana, Texas. I'm like 5 minutes from the school here. I can walk home if they tossed me out for not being able to straight line back.
