The place I used to work for had quad 53 foot and spread 48 foot trailers. It was actually easier to back the quad than the spread. With the rear axle lifted, even though it was longer, you could back into spots faster than the spreads.

I've only pulled a spread about one time but I guess they pivot on whichever axle they feel like while a tighter spread will have a more certain and predictable pivot point.

Yes, with a spread, they'll pivot on whichever has more weight at the time so it'll change as you clear a hump or hole or crown of the road, etc. and tries to rip the lighter axle out from under the trailer!!
@passingthru69 can you dump or adjust the air in your axles individually?
I used to pull a three axle lowbed that the first two where on a walking beam and the third was air, no lift, and no ride height valve, just a regulator.. So by adjusting the air to the tail axle you could balance the axles or change the pivot point, or lift the front two right off the ground when empty.. It was old, but worked well.

Are there any dos and donts with rimhooking? Do you set the brakes and leave it out of gear? Brakes off? It worked slick, I wanted to say thank you!!

I think keeping the chain length shorter between the wheel & trailer would be better. And definitely always set brakes.

Careful now. Some people might not realize you're referring to a wheel on a vehicle you're hauling as cargo. :laughing6:
