    Chain season law.

Chain season is generally Oct 15 to Apr 15, but personally I hold it to late Sept to late April. Because of mountain snow that is possible during that time.

Most of my time there was no chain whatever on that tractor trailer therefore we did not run the chains states at all. And if we did, it's with a very careful gamble against the current weather fronts coming from the pacific, alaska and siberia before an attempt is dispatched that far into NW. Some of my most memorable runs out of there is literally not stopping until at least Odgen, Fort Bridger or even Cheyenne against a major winterstorm trying to catch me barefoot. (No chain)

In my later years on the road we carried full chain could care less what winter would do in the intermountain west most of time. If they did close a pass and require chain, we are usually asleep like bears inside a truckstop a few days until the storm passed. There is no cargo short of war that is worth throwing chain on.

Some documentation from the state web site would be good stating these dates and requirements.

After you chain up a few times, it's no big deal. Usually when chains required is put into effect, it is for " minimum chain " which is 2 single chains on the same axle on the truck and 2 single chains on the trailer. This can be done in 30 minutes or less with practice.
When full chain is required, three rail chains are required in addition to the 4 single chains. These are time consuming. I'm refering to the north west here.
Calif has it's own system. I have seen them require chains on wet roads as in no snow on the road.

To my knowledge that part of Colorado is the only place that you have to carry chains.

I'm convinced that hardly anybody reads road signs. Going into Idaho from Utah there's a sign that says "trucks use left lane next 6 miles", and just about every time I've had people honk and flip me off while they pass on the right.
