I'm old-school myself. I sure miss my gear shift. But we might as well get used to it. Unless I have been misinformed as a 2017 unless special ordered all trucks are going to be automatics.

I find that really hard to believe unless you're talking about mega company truck orders

...well I don't work for a mega, and I know all our newly ordered trucks are '17 models they are all autos.. I have a friend that drives for another outfit 250 trucks just ordered a number of new trucks all autos . Another friend drives for a even smaller company they just got 9 new Petes all autos . ... Like I said only stating what I heard from a company rep not to long ago. New breed drivers, Auto transmissions,GPS instead of a map and using brain power,in cab cameras, ELDs, lane departure warning systems. Dear God what happened to This industry.

When your 1st or 2nd biggest expense is fuel, anything that gives better MPG is the default.

I guess to me a mega company is anything over 100 trucks

Nobody orders a truck or trucks with out specifications for the build. how would the factory know what gears to put in, whether it should have a particular engine, what color, fairings, sliding 5th wheel....

Dealers may be building spec trucks to have on their lot but the factory does not just ship them a "truck".

I have spent the last 2 months working on the spec for my new truck including review by both factory and component engineering review to ensure a supportable solution.

Calling ahead to a shipper is always a great idea. However there are lots of times that you can't get through to anyone or at least anyone who knows what they're talking about. Which was my case. I can deal with a lot of things but staying out on the road for two weeks at a time for less than 600 per week it's something I cannot do. If the miles aren't there then the money is not there. If the money is not there then to be perfectly honest I'm not interested in making it work. If I'm going to work for that amount of money I can take a normal job and be home with my family every night. I drive a truck because I enjoy it and for the money. As for all the little things such as pulling nails and a fridge and that sort of thing I could deal with it's the miles we're here and as I stated in my original post I can work through the little things. But once again when the miles are not there then the money is not there and my reason for being here is gone. Now some drivers can do it and be perfectly fine with it. And those drivers are happy with the money they make. I on the other hand I'm not sleeping in a truck for 2 weeks for $1,200 or less. If other people are happy with that then by all means feel free to apply.

10 speeds are falling by the wayside. Auto shift is better fuel economy and that's why companies are going to autos. This is a trend that is taking hold in the industry and with the exception of a few companies they will all be automatics within the next three to five years. And it's for two reasons. The main reason is economics of course. Companies like to save money. The second reason is technology. They don't have to worry about an employee burning the clutch out of a truck. They don't have to worry about the driver's attention focused on Gears instead of the road. And it is also less fatigue on the driver. This is especially true with someone with lower back or knee problems. To be honest people do not Embrace change well. The changeover from paper log electronic log. from cabover to conventional. And so on and so forth. What I find funny is most of the truckers who hate autos who come over to autos usually love them after about 2 weeks.
