Nobody wants to be told their work isn't important. And that wasn't my intent originally. But the arrogance that is displayed here by truckers is comical. Do you really think you are not replaceable? Do you think the country will grind to a halt because of you? If you are all getting $3 per mile why is it that the truckerreport shows the cost to operate per mile at $1.38 which includes salary? I get that it is based on a long haul miles but the discrepancy is pretty steep.

You Sir are a idiot. First you have not provided a decent description to the job. Just as dumb If agreed to remodel you kitchen with out seeing it or asking what you want. Second ATRI reports 1.63 for tractor trailer with driver. IF I wanted driver pay Id work for someone else and be a driver. This is America, Im here to make a million dollars, not a million friends. Im done whith this guy

600 miles per day at $1.4 equals $840. 100 gallons of fuel and you are left with $600. Out of that $300 goes towards the driver. Company is left with $300.
To make the same money on 300 miles, you gotta get $725.
However, those numbers are just to operate the truck, there is no profit to be made. Company can't just work to break even, you gotta make a profit. Hopefully this helps you out a bit.
Sure, maybe you can find a sucker for $600 gross per day, who does not understand how a business works, but fortunately majority of people in this thread are not that stupid

I wouldn't work a truck for anything less than 100/hr.

OP do you really think cheap freight is irreplaceable?
There's plenty of poor businessman trying to move cheap freight. Easy to find a cheap shipper that runs an unsuccessful business and tries to pass his expenses along to another business to claim a "profit"

You sir, are easily replaceable. If you paid enough to keep someone happy, you wouldn't be on an Internet forum attempting to tell people the rate you're paying is fair. You'd have a good reliable carrier and not worry about what that carrier charged, because it's a pass thru charge, or a mark up and pass thru charge.

Being a cheap shipper means you don't have a successful business with the means to pay for good vendor service.

I'll elaborate a bit. I had 2 relatives who were single truck owner ops hauling for the same company as independent contractors. Both ran newer equipment and kept it in top condition. They were paid about $100/hr. I will tell you that you can raise a family of 4 off that income but there is not very much left over for fun. Might see a new vehicle in the driveway every 10 years if you're lucky. Family vacations? What are those? Can't afford those on a single income.

I won't call you an idiot, but you are terribly naive.

I'll buy the $1.38 per mile for a long haul truck. At 65 miles per hour, that's awfully close to $200 per hour, don't you agree? Now, a local truck doesn't quite burn the fuel or rack up quite as much maintenance, but still over $100 per hr. Well over.

Of course, that is truck operating cost, not business operating cost. Add overhead such as office space, staff, communications, compliance costs, etc. Even if Momma does it, she doesn't have to work for free, do you think? Let's call it $15 per hr, If you think you can run a trucking operation on less overhead costs, you are one silly bugger.

Then, there's this profit thing. Funny that, but someone putting a truck on the road deserves a profit. Say 15% of gross? Let's call it $20 an hr.

Add it up, and it costs awfully close to $150 per hour to run a local truck. That's just the way it is. Much less, and something's getting neglected or ignored.
