You're not going to escape that running west. Sure you have Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, etc, which are all nice and warm year 'round, but you also have Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and all of the mountain passes to deal with.

As far as the western mountains go, it can snow anytime from September to May. Are you ready to hang iron before you take a ride up over Donner on I-80 in California, Snoqualmie on I-90 in Washington, or Vail on I-70 in Colorado? Even the southern route can get bad. I-40 from Tucumcari, NM to Flagstaff, AZ can be a winter wonderland.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the western states as I used to live and run there, and they have some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the country. Just remember that it's not all "peaches and cream" running out there.

Do they have state workers in those "chain up" areas that put your chains on for you? Lol

There's lumpers in the "chain up" areas, but no Comcheks; only cash.

In the North West, usually you can " minimum chain" which is two singles on the same axle of the tractor and two singles on the trailer. I can do it alone in less than 30 min. I've never paid anyone to chain up or me. Hanging the three rail chains is no fun.

Well maybe "cash" will get the job done in a REASONABLE time as Comcheck doesn't seem to do so...lol

I've seen these spring style that some carriers have, they seem like they wouldn't be as effective as the usual chains.

Sister lives in Mammoth Lakes, in my misbegotten youth I worked ski seasons in Vail/Breckenridge, born and raised in Green Bay, snow, chains, mountains dont bother me none.
I'm 56, old school work ethic, I know what you said is all true.
I took care of my dying (cancer) mother the last 5 months of her life in Bishop CA, on the 395, many runs up to oncologist in Reno, chaining up her SUV and driving through whiteout blizzards to get her meds.
Grant posters here a little respect, not all are naive newbies...
I drove a straight truck hauling construction materials out of Denver through two winters on roads you dont drive in a rig and sane people dont drive in the summer...lol
I like challenges, my daughter is a flight attendent out of San Francisco and the few family I have in the Midwest are drinking/drugging themselves to death.
I'm moving to Nevada, my sister and her hubby just bought a place there.
Thanks for your concern for my safety and desire to "fill me in" on the ramifications of my choice. Truly. I appreciate your desire to "help" me, but I'm a big boy who has a plan I will execute.
