I was truckin up out of Florida. My cobra 19 ultra started smoking, and wouldn't talk. Stopped in a rest area and the rest of the convoy stopped too. I told them the trouble and a guy said he had a cobra 29. Sold it to me for forty five dollars. Hooked up in a flash and we was back trucking.
That thing was awesome, had a conex board inside, and I talked for fifty miles away.
What is more important than the radio is what you have to say. If you are going to say dumb stuff or play music, by all means get a cheap one with zero power, and always use a dead battery in your power mic.Last edited: Nov 23, 2016

Really easy to talk 50 miles from a Mountaintop across a 50-mile valley to a mountain on the other side

I still use a Uniden PC76xl, from like 25 plus years ago. Aint nothing fancy. Won it on a hand of poker in Calhoun LA in another life time. The CB shop there was very good.
I don't worry too much about wattage etc. All of that is not really necessary. It's enough to install antennas and then establish a SWR etc to fit.
Range? It depends. 10 miles maybe. More or less depending.
What gets me is we are running old style analogue communciations in this age of digital comms. I'll hold on to mine a while longer.bored silly and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -

HP on a radio just simply means High power. Nothing more nothing less. 3400 is the model number as well as the 655 the hp behind it just means higher power output ability then a normal 3400 or 655. Galaxy is a good radio that can have all the toys built in. I personally prefer the striker radios, but that is simply a personal choice. Of the three that you mentioned I would go with the striker radio because in my humble opinion they are built better for bouncing around in the truck. And I've always had real good luck with them, but honestly, I have owned all three of the radios that you mentioned at one time or another and any of the three would work fine.x1Heavy, BTShepp and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
