DD15 engine eating one gallon of oil for every 5000-6000 mile, Please advise.. :(

    How can I clean that box ? It's only burn oil on low rpm. Between oil changes less than half gallon. 15000 miles.

    That is the recommended drain on a pre-egr Series 60 engine. Not sure why one would change that soon with a DD15. I could see 25,000 to 35,000. Detroit recommends 50,000, but that goes outside my comfort level. I haven't changed a truck engine oil at less than 20,000 miles in over 2 decades. Never lost an engine and took a couple over 1 million with no major repairs. One to 1.4 million and it went right to work for next owner.

    What are you basing the 15K mile OCI's on?

    Remove the right side fairing. Removed the bolts holding on the cover. 10mm will work or a inverted Torx. Not sure size. Remove band clamps on the dog filters. There will be 4 total clamps to take off. I would not recommend it if you do not know.what your doing. If you crack your dpf, you will need to replace both. Your looking at $5k for both filters. DD motors run 5W30. If you run 15w40, you will have problems later on.

    You must be wrong. At the Freightliner dealership I worked at before my wife and I moved. We ran only 5w30 in the GHG DD and 15w30 in the non GHG motors. At my current work, we run 5w30 full synthetic only. These GHG motor tolerances are getting smaller. Example. If you do a oil cooler module reseal due to gasket leaking. If you use the rolo disc to clean off the old gasket. You will got get it clean enough to keep all the aluminum shaving out. You will take the motor out. I seen it done and saw pictures for DD warranty denied claim. You cannot see how small the aluminum shavings are but the motor sees it.

    I must not be wrong. Read the 2016 Detroit Lube, filters, and Fuel manual. Also check new delivery spec sheets for the last few years for DD13 and DD15, factory fill is 10w30.

    Tolerances mean nothing on what we are discussing here. Viscosity is NOT thickness, it is resistance to flow. Ask Isaac Newton in the next life and he will enlighten you. And a 5w30 has the same viscosity at 100c (engine operating temp) as a 10w30. Roughly 12.5 cST. Only the cold flow is different, and not by much. This tighter tolerances nonsense as it relates to oils is passed around the internet as if it were fact.

    A 0w30, 5w30, 10w30, 15w30, and a straight 30 all have the same viscosity at operating temperature. The number before the "w" has little to do with the viscosity classification of the oil, it is a cold flow rating. The "w" stands for winter, not weight. A 0w30 gets it's CCS rating at -35C/-31F, a 5w30 gets it's CCS rating at -30C/-22F, and a 10w30 gets it's CCS rating at -25C/-13F. And to prove the point, say for a 0w30, there is no such thing as a 0 weight oil. Then why is it a 0w30? Because the oil is able to meet the lubricating oil cold crank simulator (CCS) standard at -35C to qualify.

    So many myths, so little time.

    I know all what you posted on oil. What I posted was pounded in our heads there on what oil to use. Naturally, that will still be the case for me on what oil to use. It was a write up if you used the wrong oil in the wrong motors.
