I saw the other thread in "Bad Companies", and just wanted to put MY opinions/facts about the company I am a current driver for.

I just started my 3rd year with them.
Yes, it is a Christian Company, and Conservative Politically.
HL has a pretty good health insurance plan. They also have a complete Integris Medical Facility on site. It's free (no copay, etc) for any FT employee who has the Insurance.
It does also have a Chapel for anyone to go pray in, or for someone to put a prayer request. HL is not "in your face" with their beliefs...and it's not "cult-like".

I make very good money with them. The drivers generally have the same route, and same stores every week...or every other week.
There are over 900 (I believe) stores nationwide.
We make a delivery to a store, and drivers do not unload. Then we either do a store cleanup, or receive a backhaul, and head back to OKC to pickup a trailer for our next store.
We get 2 days off. One week, I have fri/sat. off then the next I get sat/sun off.
We get paid Hub to Hub miles. We get a quarterly incentive check that is impossible not to get (I've never failed to receive one)
Mechanics are first-class, and do a great job.
The MGRS. have an open door policy, and I can talk to safety or my manager without waiting behind a glass window. I can just walk into where they are, and go straight to him.
    Almost everything is drop/hook.

Really not too much negative, as long as you are safe, do your job, do what they ask, and make your store apps on time.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but that is my .02 as being a company driver with HL.

How much of their fleet is solo operated? Do they try and push drivers into team operations?

I don't know how many drivers are solo (there are some), but for the most part, it's a team operation. Just basically because of the way their routes are designed.

Do you know if they can they pair you up with somebody or do you have to come in with a partner already?

I think it just kind of depends on where you live. Like for instance, if you lived in Texas, they could pair you up with someone in Oklahoma, and then you could just take the truck and keep it our new facility in Hitchens.
But, if you lived in a place like Florida, then it's probably better to already have a codriver in mind.

I'm here in OKC. I have a friend who's dad retired from there but I never got a chance to talk to him about HL before he passed away. I drove a while back and got out of it and would love to get back into it. I don't plan on leaving this job but would in a second if it was a really good deal, HL anyway. I despise my job now....well the people anyway, it's a cesspool! I know the friends dad loved it there according to them and he didn't really want to retire but I never knew the whole story behind that. Thank you for responding HL Drvr.

No problem, Bear. I honestly couldn't see myself driving for another company.
If you live in OKC, then no, you don't need to have a codriver.
In fact, Sandy (our recruiter) would probably ask if you wanted to be OTR, or drive containers down to Dallas...and deliver to more local stores.
I chose to go over the road. Not sure what the hourly rate would be for local drivers, though.
Yes, HL is a company to retire from.
Another nice thing they do give us, is a Christmas bonus every year, and it's $100....for each yr you work there.
So, if you're there 8 yrs, you get an $800 Christmas bonus....and so forth.

SavageSam, Mtn Gal, macmoran and 3 others Thank this.

I have been looking for some information like this NO. Myself and another driver are trying to get on there as a team. However they don't have anything in your area at this time. Very good info and sounds very much what I have been looking for. In my opinion my opinion only sounds as close to getting driving for Walmart if you can get it. Thank you for this information it is what I have been looking for

I haven't driven for walmart, but I guess it is similar.
HL only has one distribution center, and that's the one in OKC, where Walmart has them all over the Country.
Our trucks are faster than walmart, though!:)

Yes I realize that. I was only meaning in the sense that they only deliver to their stores. Being a private fleet and such. On average how many loads do you have that are multiple stops?
