I always thought that the 387 was theire worst seller. I think the 386 was meant more for an OO than fleets.

I don't know how much engineering it took. Neither truck has any crazy integration system like the prostar. Just a matter of making a wiring harness.

Actually i think your right. Which ever model # was identical to the t2000. That's the one i wad thinking of. I've had a 377 and a 379. They were identical except for the hood and set back axle.

And at first glance without digging to hard, the same appears to be true with the 579 and 389.

389, roller, 20/40s, low air leaf, full lockers, single frame, high end dash, low end interior.
Base list was $62k, but that's before anything is on it somehow- i.e. Frame rails

Same dealer has on their lot 20/46 with enough wheelbase to move the bogies where I need them, idk bout the interior... @ $89,5. However they are also on air trac and have 3.91. I want low air and 3.55.

    *It's just money*

Just an idea for some of you who don't want to spend $160K on a glider. You can buy a two year old 389 for $90K all day long. IF you buy one with a Paccar, they are junk, the sale price reflects that. They are 15K less than the same truck with a Cummins.
Buy a two year old truck with 250K miles, immediately drive to a Cat shop, drop a 6NZ in it for $25K, sell the Paccar for $12K.... Congratulation, you have a nearly new "glider" with a new mill and no DPF/EGR for around $100K.
I just saved you $60,000... You owe me a beer.

What an absolutely ignorant post... "Digital gauges"? LOL... Yeah, a 2013 has a J1939/CAN-Bus system like every truck since 1998. Do you think a fuel gauge has a wire running from the dash to the pickup in the fuel tank? LOL... Wake up and smell the 21st century.

Or you can find an old pete for under 20k and put 70k into it for rebuilding everything, painting, interior and new wiring. Then you don't have to worry about swapping an old motor into a new truck. Even better is when there has already been an inframe and you still find the truck at 20k or less.

Ok smart guy, whats the difference between a standard 6NZ head and a 5EK head? The 6NZ has double valve springs... Thats it, and thats why I like a 6NZ head. Why use a 5EK intake/turbo? Because its the best single turbo Cat ever built (not sure why you think a stock Cat turbo is "bullcrap"), the Acert (twin turbo) is not dependable enough. Why use the Acert block?... 4 bolts...
My "backyard hillbilly build" has been around 10 or 12 years now, hundreds (that I know of) of them have 1.2 million+ on them and many of those are 850HP to the ground....
You can buy a crate Cat all day and they work, but don't try to insult people by spewing ignorant ideas about topics you have no knowledge of.
BTW PDI is an absolute JOKE for those of us who build and program our own power plants. They are nerdy little computer geeks sitting in a room in Utah looking at sheets of paper trying to figure out what guys like me need out on the road. The reason YOU can't run a motor like mine is because you buy stuff off the shelf and those geeks don't deal with anything outside the box. You don't even know what J1939 is so I know for a fact that you never work on your own equipment. Guys like you CANT run "hillbilly builds" like mine.

I've done that. If you have 40 hours a week and two years to strip and rebuild a truck to be like new, that works. Most people who want new(er) trucks need to be on the road making money. Your idea seems more like a nostalgia project than a build that you can go make money with in 3 weeks. Don't get me wrong, I love old trucks and rebuilt a '69 Pete COE just to have an old truck but it was just a hobby.
