Why bother asking what? My comment you quoted is in regard to normal, general driving conditions, not my original question regarding driving on the pass. Sometimes these threads go down rabbit trails before getting back to the original topic...

seems you already have your mind made up how your going to run
I find that most people ask a question then want to point out why I am wrong
In 1975 drivers said power steering would ruin trucking that you wouldn't feel the road. In 1982 everyone cut ABS lines because they were sure you needed to lock the wheels up to stop
same is said today about auto and running in auto full time

I've made up my mind on how to run in normal driving conditions. I have not made up my mind regarding driving over the pass. I think you confused my comment about the transmission in general with my original question.

One of the biggest things is get as much exp. running those same roads when dry, before you get thrown on them wet or snow/ice. This will allow you to get some familiarity with the truck and the trans to ease your anxiety, and also learn some of the quirks of the whole setup in safer conditions.

I hope that when I move up to WA I'm not issued an auto. I'm in one now and it's a love/hate relationship. I have almost no elements to deal with here in CA but when it rains, I have to think a bit more in this thing.

The biggest problem with auto's is in most cases the grey matter between the drivers ears.

First step in using any piece off machinery is RTFM.

I just don't like how jerky the shifts can be. I'm pulling a semi tanker and the tranny likes to skip gears going up and down and not smoothly. The liquid surge likes to SLAM me in certain conditions. And when I climb, the truck is gutless because I can't work WITH the surge. But when I'm hauling dry bulk, it's unnoticeable other than those clunky shifts.

Have you tried not pushing the pedal so deep?
Doesn't work for all autos but some are sensitive to it.
