Is it legitimate to charge people to back their trailer for them?

I wouldn't trust anyone to back me in either. I was having trouble at one dock and a guy from another company offered to back me in(probably so he could get me out of the way) and I told him I'd rather move and let him unload first than let him drive my truck. Same reason. Didn't matter though, I put it in there on the next attempt lol

There's nothing wrong with spotting drivers though.

Not really. Actually, OP could just get out of the truck and calmly go get in his. Then, the other driver has to deal with the consequences of letting someone else drive his/her truck. All the OP has to do is say he never drove that thing in the first place. Of course, that's assuming the other driver didn't take pictures with OP behind the steering wheel.

Here's what I would do OP. If you want to charge them for your help, that's between you and them. But try to limit your help to being outside their truck and telling them what to do. I would bet your company wouldn't be too happy with you driving other companies equipment either.

I work for Swift, so you're probably right. And definitely I'm not a pro at backing. 6 weeks ago I barely obtained by CDL. But in the subsequent weeks I've hit more docks than most otr drivers will hit in 6 months, because almost every load we get has 6 or more stops and it's all tight turns, city driving, blindside and 90 degree backs, alley docks etc.

Let's just say when Trucker's Path says my preferred stop is full, I'll still take a couple of laps around the lot. People mark them full because they couldn't find a spot that they could back into. Definitely not an expert, but I'm also not scared to back a trailer anymore.

When I was at Werner there was this new driver sitting at the picnic table looking like he lost his best friend,i asked another driver what was wrong with him and he said that new driver let someone back in his trk and totaled someone else's trk. That stuck with me all thruout my career.

Half these trucks have driver facing cameras. What if you set the camera off and their company sees someone not employed by them behind the wheel? I would imagine that's grounds for termination.

Also, and don't take this personal, but anyone that lets a driver in training back their truck for them needs to find another line of work. This job takes a little pride.

And as far as charging for it, well, I think it's kind of douchey, but I guess that's why I'm not financially rich. Lol. If you're comfortable with it and they agree…

What does private property have to do with it?

    NOTHING.

By the way I think Swift may have something to say about it, they are liable for your actions if you didn't know that.

Just don't mention word Swift when you talk about your skills, because other people can't take you seriously when they hear that
