I am extremely frustrated with my experience with both the Rand McNally Trucker GPS units I've owned over the last 6 years. I drive a propane truck in southern CA, and I do anywhere from 35 to 50 (local) delivery stops a day up in the mountains of Fallbrook, Vista, Escondo..ect. This is a job where you don't have time to use a map. I got so frustrated with their support telling me to enter my comments into the GPS, which was not addressing the real issues. They would not let me talk to their corporate headquarters. I got a hold of the Vice President of Rand Mc Nally, who incidentally came off as a very arrogant and fast talking guy. After I told him the issues, he said, " Well maybe you should use another brand." Then he asked me, "What would you like me to do", but in a very rude kind of tone, like how am I suppose to fix this. At the end of the conversation he said he would have an engineer call me, but It's been a week and no calls back. This guy doesn't seem to care. This company clearly doesn't care about the real issues or else they would allow the consumer to reach the top of the chain more easily. I was actually trying to get a hold of the CEO Steven A Fletcher, but that's an one going process as he is on vacation at the moment.
Here are the issues:
This thing is horrible when it comes to finding address on Reservations and even certain towns like Vally Center CA, Vista CA, Fallbrook. I always end up using google maps on my phone daily because Google finds theses address with out a problem. The other major issues with the Rand McNally GPS units is that they are totally unaware of privet roads and community gates you can't pass though. This is a HUGE problem for me in the mountains because you could drive for 30 mins onto a route only to run into a community gate that doesn't go through. Now you're driving 30 mins back to try to find an alternate route to your target. Google maps don't seem to have anywhere near as many issues with roads that don't go through. I've also been requesting for a software update to make the GPS warn you when you're going the wrong way. Most GPS units do. I have the 520 and it will take you 15 or more miles in the wrong direction only to show you a loop at the end of the trail. There is no reason why the unit can't calculate the fact that you're driving further away from your target. This thing should not be called a professional truckers GPS, It's sucks for local delivery's in SoCA, and is absolutely worthless on Reservations like, Ringcon, Pala CA, Vally Center, san pasqual CA.
When I moved to CA three years ago, we used the Rand 510 to go from Chicago to San Dieago, and my family keep telling me to throw the thing out the window. My dad ended up using his phone for some places that the (510 I was using at the time) couldn't seem to get right. With the 520 I always keep the unit up to date with the latest map and updates. I even added a required memory card for the latest map update. I think Rand McNally uses Thomson Maps company to do their surveying according to one of the techs. Obviously they're not as good as whomever Google uses to do their surveying. I realize that over the road drivers use maps, but you can NOT do that in my industry. We have over 15,000 customers we service with 7 drivers. I don't even have time to stop and eat with this many accounts in the winter. If I didn't know some of the locations already, this GPS would get me fired from my job. I am so pissed about the VPs attitude. I hope the CEO is not the same... If I ever get to talk to him.

Now that you have had so many issues as you say why have you never posted in the support thread? You found Electronic Connection, but I do not ever recall you posting issues since you had issues with the 510. I cannot help if you do not post.
I have been with the TND since the day it was "Born." I was one of the three that brought it into this world. So, I do know a thing or three about the TND's.
Google Maps happen to use Satellite Mapping which can be changed in a short amount of time since you look at Maps from their servers and they are not on your hardware. Google Maps does not go into details about the nitty-gritty of what the road is. Meaning, it does not include the hundred's of details of the road segments showing things like speed, direction of travel, weight limit, etc.
I do not know of any GPS that will "warn" you if you are going the wrong way. The GPS will try to get you turned around if you are going in the wrong direction of travel to your destination, or will calculate a new route. The GPS only knows your direction of travel via the Lat/Long. It does not suddenly say "oops, we are going the wrong way."
As for going 15 miles out of your way, it depends on your truck settings and then you may encounters roads that trucks are not allowed on nor HazMat and this is in the map details which Google Maps does not see. The roads may be local roads that the "weight" of the road is set to "0" in the maps. You will never be routed on a "0" weighted road even as a car. This is in the Map Database and can be changed via the Map Company.
Sorry but community gates are not part of the road system and are not in the map database. These are external to the road system.
RM uses HERE (Navteq) maps.
Now you just happen to have one of those jobs that fall into the "zone" of a lot of local roads. But, based upon how those road and their segments are build into the map database will determine how you will be routed.
Indian Reservations - if they have roads and have been reported to the State DOT then they should be in the Map Database. If they decide to build a road and not report it to the state then it will not be in the Map Database. RM cannot control this.
Now if you have issues please report the issue in the support thread which is in the same area as where you posted this. Report such as "x" road it will not route me, but let me know what your settings are. A good way to determine if a map or restriction. Put in car mode if it routes you but will not in truck mode then it is a truck restriction. If in car mode it will not route you then it is a Map issue.
I am not going to address any issues on this thread since I try to keep the RM Support threads down to a small few so I do not have to repeat myself in a lot of threads.

That's one of the pros in dealing with Rand McNally. At least they provide a means to report missing data, erroneous data, etc. Garmin offers nothing in that regard. Emails sent to any tech support get treated with a canned reply that is irrelevant. Garmin seems to have made the decision they are done with software improvements and updating truck related data for any/all of their truck GPS products.
At least Rand McNally appears to continue to strive to improve their truck GPS lines. Sounds like the OP issue is more with Navteq than Rand McNally.Mark Kling Thanks this. -
The OP can go to Best Buy and try some of the addresses in question on competitor devices they have on demo. The address reconciliation engine is going to more or less be the same across like brands.
-
I truly suspect the OP delivers in areas like residential area's that are tagged "No trucks" in the map database.
The GPS is an aid... You cannot blame the GPS for getting you fired if you cannot find a location.
And in talking to the CEO you think he will be able to address the issues of routing? He runs the business, not down in the trenches doing the nitty-gritty job of research and finding what the issues are in routing. He will just pass it down the line.
I just think the issue is your type of job and the area's that you have to deliver too.LGarrison Thanks this. -
I have the same issues with my RM5xx.
What I do is use my iPhone maps in conjunction with my RM GPS.
9/10, the RM puts me on the shortest truck route
10/10 the phone puts me in front of my destination
OP is 100% correct about the RM sometimes routing you 20 miles down the road just to have you turn around and go in the right direction.
Other times it screams for you to make a u-turn in the most ridiculous places. I wish it would just say, "you need to go in the opposite direction," or something that would let me know I need to be going south on 85 when I'm going north.
I have noticed that my RM vary by city I'm in which makes me believe it's just a mapping issue. In Savannah, I was routed through a residential neighborhood to turn around. While in Salisbury, NC I was routed 8 miles to a highway entrance route only to be taken back to the same road I was on just heading the opposite way.
Using a phone at the same time also helps with are was with lots of new construction. My phone map knows that exit 58 on 85S has been pushed down .25 mile while my RM thinks I'm floating in space when I exit and doesn't know which way I should turn at the light.
... It's just a tool. Use your phone with it. -

Bought about one year ago -
A lot will depend on your settings also. In routing and truck.
Have you updated to the latest maps for this year?CornStalk Thanks this. -
I don't mind though. Like I said, I use the RM and a phone at the same time. I see the RM as a part of my tool box. Nothing is perfect.
