I'd say get your personal affairs on the home front in order and prepare to be gone awhile initially. Just in case you don't get a west run right away with your trainer.

Are you living in Casper? I've been through there a few times in the past 6 months, I really like that area.

I'm sure you've got the specifics from Mike and/or Kassi. Don't expect much of anything flatbed specific at orientation. That you'll learn with your trainer.

Good luck and keep us posted.

    Hey Zach

Thanks for the advise think I got everything at home squared away and yes I live in Casper love it here was -30 a few days ago could do without that but otherwise couldn't see living anywhere else and yes I have talked to Mike about most everything I think I need to know have to wait now to see if they will accept me into the program or not I know space is limited other than clothes and toiletries and be dig anything else you would say bring or don't bring while out with a trainer

Bring your atlas, a few pairs of gloves, sunglasses and safety glasses. I have yellow tinted safety glasses I sometimes use at dusk and cloudy winter days that work well for me.

Your trainer will have a hard hat for you to use if you don't get one issued in Grand Forks for some reason. Typically you'll get a hard hat and safety vest at orientation.

If you have or planned on getting a gps, you can bring that to give you a chance to get used to it but it's not necessary. I went without one for a couple months once I went solo before getting one. It's been a big help keeping me off roads that the atlas says are good for trucks but I've vowed to never drive on again!

That's all I can think of for now.

Good evening sirs. I've enjoyed reading this thread and would like to introduce myself. I am a new driver just issued CDL out of Jacksonville, FL. I am committing myself to flatbed, now that I have had some time to think. (was thinking tanker, but feel flatbed is definitely for me and my plan)- I have my TWIC, Passport, and Hazmat endorsement.

Anyhoo, I contacted Mike while i was still in school, and he briefly told me about the student program, and told me to apply after I had my actual license. Applied today formally, and spoke again to Mike. He is a nice fellow, and he is currently processing my app/ mvr/ etc. He also told me he has to see what his trainer's schedule is like. I'm thinking that would be MrED!

@MrEd Thanks so much for making this thread all the way back to 2011. It's a real good resource, with great info.
I will have my fingers crossed, as I realize being from Jax, it may not work out. Would love the opportunity though, as I can tell this is a great company with awesome people. That goes along way in my book. Do you guys see any hazmat loads?

The training schedule is pretty open right now. They haven't told me of any upcoming new drivers as of yet anyway.

The weekly premium isn't too bad. But the family deductible is either 2500 or 5000, depending on the program you chose. Company pays 100% if you are a solo driver with no family. I have my insurance through my wife's work, but Britton pays for 100% of my families dental and vision plans. Works out pretty good for us.
