I've asked around and tried to figure out what that picture is about and nobody has a 100% clear answer. The ABF guys see that picture and go "Oh boy here's one for the rumor mill."

I've seen it around here and the union LTL boys don't like it one bit. It's overflow capacity, I was told. Not as common outside of holiday season.

And yes, Werner, Swift and friends do have pups. Hereabouts you'll see them heading into metro areas with assorted dollar store chain branding on the trailers. What continues to baffle me is that they are dragging a nice metro-friendly pup with a gigantic condo sleeper. Get some bleeping day cabs, people.

Maybe it's the same thing as my old employer, FedEx Freight in Tacoma, does? They called it "purchased transport".
They use purchased transport because there is a greater amount of inbound freight than outbound, so this way they can eliminate a great deal if deadhead miles. (Funny thing is, though, back when we were Viking Freight, our line drivers ran deadhead miles all the time, and we still turned a profit.)

UPS contract language allows the use of contractors during "peak season". Heard plenty of complaining about that during today's Union Meeting, mostly safety related issues that had validity. The problem is the sheer volume of packages at this time of the year, I ALMOST feel bad for the company!

This time of year ups uses owner ops to help with the holiday boom . I know because I'm one of them .

I see UPS brown tractors pulling Swift Trailers around here sometimes as well, they must be using Swift for something?

From what I understand, they rent or lease out trailers from Swift just like you would Xtra or Star.

Yep short term lease. Beats having to buy more trls that sit for 10 months of the year
