You cannot assume you can take your truck to another company if you purchase it through their special program. Most of the time you cannot take your truck elsewhere. You can stay with the company or you can pay off your truck and then leave.

I work for magnum. There is a very long thread on the favorite companies forum about us. You can ask any questions you want to about us over there. You need to work here for four months before going on performance pay, and at less than a year of experience, they'd probably send you out with a trainer for a few weeks, first.

I have respect for Crete/Schaefer...I just didn't want to work for a company that size again. There are plenty of companies that pay well, treat drivers decently, and hire out of Texas. I don't know of many Otr outfits that don't hire out of Texas.

That seems to be the norm. You don't have a year you'll have to run a month or more with a trainer. The first time I ran with a trainer it wasn't bad but it sucks having two dudes in a space this small. I got lucky and my trainer wasn't bad but he's still someone taking up space. I got suckered into Werner because they owned, or funded, or whatever the drivers school that I went to. They were talked up so much that it was hard to say no. Plus they got me pre-hired there and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing there...just trying to get my CDL and drive so I jumped on the first train that wanted me. I didn't even know about Crete or anyone else. I thought 35 cpm was high for a starter...I was so ignorant then...I guess I still am thinking I can jump the gun this early on and drive o/o. I think I'll stick with Werner until I get my 1 year in and leave. I average about 800 a week here minus taxes and all that. Not bad but not a permanent thing...good thing I posted this before making a decision.

Yeah Werner did "run" the school I went to...they suckered a few of us in no doubt. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I was picking someone to drive for. They got us pre-hired before we even had our CDLs there and I just jumped onboard.

It will not be on Werner's account. It will be on your bill at their discounted rate. When you buy a tire on the road, it will be billed to you at Werner's rate. That amount will be subtracted from your "paycheck" the week they pay you for that particular load. Your "paycheck" will be called Settlement. You can and may have negative settlements. You almost can't get a negative paycheck as a company driver. The cost of tires and maintenance comes out of the Werner bank account.

IMO, it's is crazy and irresponsible, to go from newbie with less than a year experience to owner-operator or lease-operator. You have experience with exactly 1 trucking company, and not a particularly good one, and are asking about jumping from the frying pan into a very, very hot fire as an owner-op or lease-op. Making the numbers work is about a whole lot more than having an attitude and saying "I'll just try harder than others" to succeed. Please for the love of avoiding bankruptcy go read the owner-op and lease-op section. You can easily spend 3-6 months carefully reading the info their which will routinely and frequently answer the basics you want to know. Frankly, I suggest you avoid thinking about putting that hook in your mouth until maybe next year (2018). Spend the next few months getting your 1 year OTR experience from Werner and finding a better paying, less time consuming way to get miles at another company, if there isn't something more suitable at Werner. There are better paying companies that may be better for you to work for. Owning or leasing a truck is probably 50-100% more work than driving and there are no days off. They payments keep coming whether you are ready or not. Until you find a specialty area of trucking you are going to get a little bit more money for a lot more worry as an owner or lease-op. You are going to need something around $30k minimum plus a month or two of living expenses in the bank before you can even sign up to jump off the cliff.
