Anti-gel over kill?

I saw a warning on my last company truck. It wasn't the manufacturer that put the sticker on, it was my trucking company that did.

I use ATF in my oil: I top off til the full line the day before dumping the oil.

Fuel filters I use that Seafoam stuff. I have heard awful things about it as an oil additive- but I don't use it for that.
What I can say is Seafoam filled fuel filters my truck starts like a dream.
Try it one time. Makes me smile ever time.

 

Yep. Also states that they cannot void a warranty due to modifications unless they can prove the modifications caused the failure.

 

I always heard you should keep your tanks full of fuel to help prevent gelling. I'm not arguing, just asking.

I am guilty as stated. But "they" tell me to do it, and it's not my money.

Yeah, I heard baby diapers work great.

 

Keeping the tanks full won't help prevent gelling, only help prevent condensation. Gelling is when the waxes in the diesel fuel start to solidify (or freeze).

 

Hes right. First place its going to gel is at the filters, not the tanks.

 

Ok, This will show my age, but in the winter time with Cat motors, we used to pull the metal screen out of the small fuel filter can. This was between the tanks and your main fuel filters.. With the can being metal and your screen being metal, Well you guessed it. The darn thing would freeze up. It was to designed to separate the water out of the fuel. If not cleaned every couple of days in the winter you would freeze up.. Trying to thaw out a Cat motor and repriming the lines was not my idea of fun in the winter time

 

Priming a 3406 in the summer sucks. 1/2 hour at least. In winter tow it to a heated shed.

 

my old man told me in Alaska they had a huge pan underneath the diesel engines in the trains, and if they had to start them cold they'd just fill the pan with fuel and light it, the whole engine would be engulfed in flames but it would warm up and start.

 

There are a bunch of add on heaters you can buy and if you buy additives and insulation you could pay for the heater and still buy yourself dinner.

My 1985 Mack RW had a ZeroStat fuel heater on it when I bought it I took it off as I don't run in severe weather anyways it used the engine coolant to preheat the fuel right before the filters my truck has a primary and secondary. There are other heaters that are magnetic with electric heat tape so you can wrap your filters like you would a pipe at home, I seen another heater that was diesel fired that would heat the coolant and the fuel through a heated changer
