Bingo ! I'm not going to devalue a radio with a mod to be able to talk on a CB band. It's more sensible in my opinion to just purchase a CB. Use the 857 for what it was designed to do.

It almost seems like that modification would increase its resale value

It does not devalue it, the age of the radio does that.

Another thing I thought of on my drive back home this morning, used ham radios are inflated with their resale value, I can't see the Icom 7000 I have being worth as much as I paid for it 7 years later but it is. I just saw one being sold for $975, I seen another on ebay for $1400 and another still for what I paid for mine - $1100. These should be around the $400 range by now.

Well if you happen to stumble across an Icom 7000 for $400 and you decide you don't want it feel free to let me know and I'll be more than happy to pick it up

I see Icom 706 MK2G's on ebay running $650.00 and more about 1/2 what I paid around 1999. When you can buy the newest improved similar radios for 800.00 to 1000.00 on sale it doesn't seem like much of a bargain.
