The only reason to do that is to save the federal excise tax. You can install new components if you like, there is nothing stopping you from doing that.

Actually here in canada you cant.
In a glider you have to have remanufactured components . They changed the rules and everything coming out of the factory for a glider can not have NEW components like trans, rears or engine.
Westernstar will build factory gliders and install reman rears at the factory for a rolling glider to facilitate this rule.

Paper work for the Vin is a simple matter. Got plenty of transmissions in stock. We built 40 gliders . Transmissions were the only part that did not have full warranty . And a manual transmission , how often do you have a issue? Dealer hung the trans , then drove them to us.

    Yes. On highway trucks.

Side question for you. When someone walks into a dealership to buy a truck there, do they sit down with a salesman and spec each individual item? Or is it more like buying a car? You pick from a few factory set designs?

Here a buyet can pick one off the lot, or spec the truck exactly how he wants it and the factory builds it that way. There are literally hundreds of components you spec. It is not uncommon to spend a full week with the salesman speccing a truck.

You can buy all new components and have them installed if you want. Either by yourself, or a shop. But a factory remanned component is just as good as a new and quite a lot cheaper. The only difference in a new and remanned rear end is the cast iron housing, all the gears, bearings and races are new. Same as with a transmission. And of course the housings have been tested to make sure they are as good as new. No wear where the bearing races will be pressed on, no stress cracks, etc etc.

It could, but we aren't in the type of need for such a truck. Despite any potential benefits, no American driver would own anything that looks like what they use across the pond. That being good, bad, or indifferent is not for me to say. That's just the reality as I'm seeing it.

You have to have the truck inspected before they will give you insurance.
ICBC has there own people who can and will physicaly look at tags on rearends and transmissions to make sure..
They are getting more and more strick on gliders here.
