@Ruthless Out of curiosity how do you feel your business model translates from a single truck operation to, say, a 10 truck fleet?
And I think I understand that running home empty is cheaper by the mile somewhat, but surely 3-500 empty deadhead home is ok but you wouldn't run 1000 miles home empty?
I guess tho if you had more trucks to handle the outbound dedicated that might give you more flexibility to find reloads home? Maybe I'm slow getting to the party and that is your plan....Ruthless Thanks this. -
The people I'm with are not shy about bouncing their guys home at times
Had one the other day. Ld fell through in central Tx. Told him go home. He lives in Ga. They say cheaper on the ling run to have driver go home, then ld them out of the house area if they canjohndeere4020, snowman_w900, Ruthless and 2 others Thank this. -
I heard that from a heavy haul guy local. Would run 3-500 miles to deliver and bounce home empty. Company got bought out and the new dispatch bounced them all over running empty looking for reloads home. He said it was a waste of time.johndeere4020 Thanks this. -
Well without over sharing publicly: basically you need to have enough good paying freight to fill your current capacity before you go Expanding your fleet.
I see a lot of single truck OO & small fleets take poorly paying work to offset the payroll and fixed expenses they have: seems to me that means the company grew before it had enough good paying freight to back up their growth.
Anybody can buy a truck/buy more trucks- you don't make more money simply by virtue of owning more equipment.
"Keep the wheels turning to keep earning" to me, sounds a lot like "buy them a penny a piece and sell them a dime a dozen"
Pick and choose good paying freight. Find a niche. Don't just take any work offered because it's offered.
Find consistent good paying work and expand from there. Same principle as having the work before you buy your first truck.4mer trucker, passingthru69, johndeere4020 and 3 others Thank this. -
