Hello all, I'm new to this forum so not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but here it goes. I currently sold my POS 2010 Cummins USD and am looking at getting another truck. I found a 2005 W900, that the guy says has a cat6nz. I don't have any experience with cat motors so I feel lost about this motor. I did some research online and everything I'm seeing is showing that the 6NZ motor wasn't in production in 2005. I'm going to go check out this truck this Saturday and was wanting to know how would I tell if this was truely a 6NZ? What all would you recommend me checking out on this motor before purchasing? It's a supposed to be a W900 with a 550 CAT6nz, 13 speed, and 3:36 rear ends. Studio sleeper. Had the cat platinum overhaul done 4 year ago. The asking price is 54k. Also has a brand new ringmaster APU, seats, exhaust pipes, radiator, and new air conditioning lines. Any advice on this motor would be much appreciated!!!

Serial number plate on engine says 6nz12345 the 12345 is part of the serial number. It's arguably one of the best on highway truck engine ever made. Good on fuel if you drive it right. 54k might be a bit steep for me. Hard to say, so far I'm not having any emissions problems with my truck KNOCK ON WOOD ....if I was 54 might not seem like a bad price at all....
ramblingman Thanks this. -
6NZ.....wasn't produced in 05.....doesn't mean this truck doesn't have one......but engine serial# will tell u.....and if for some reason can't see serial#....quick check....6NZ....cats last single turbo on road application....all since we're twins....so easy to spot....6nz was/is great motor......make sure owner has actual rebuild paperwork....lots of bad aftermarketCat parts out there....especially very unreliable head gaskets.....

I would be surprised if it was an actual 6NZ in this 2005 truck. That's a lot of trouble to swap out a perfectly good ACERT motor for a 6NZ.
It would have to be a DIY or small shop that did the actual swap. Big shops wouldn't do it because of the potential fines. It would've been a case of the ACERT block was no good?.?
Not saying that it for certain is not a 6NZ but it seems suspect. Might be an ACERT converted to single turbo. "6NZ" has become a meaningless catchy sales pitch in truck paper that basically means "any 550 hp CAT motor".
You'll see a lot of "6NZ CAT!!!" in advertisements for tractors that are 99 or older or 04 and newer, trucks that never had a 6NZ from the factory and in reality don't have one now.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
^^ true unless it was built as a glider.
-
Was W900 even available as a glider in 2005? I know they were back in the 80's or maybe 90's but they quit selling them didn't they? Was only in the past 2 or 3 years that KW got back into the glider business.
-
Appreciate everyone's input. That is exactly what makes no sense to me is that it is a 05 and he says it's got the 6NZ. Is there anyway I can tell if I get the VIN number from him? If so where would I go with the VIN to find out? Thanks!

A kw dealer could check the vin #. And tell you what engine was in it when it left the factory...
-
If it is a glider you won't get any engine information at all hence it being a glider the motor and tranny is installed after leaving the factory but the serial number plate or if we'll cared for the information can be found on the valve covers
